into the lead. Hughes fou ght closel y with Honda of Troy's Craig Decker, fellow SplitFire /Hot Wheels/Kawasaki rider Pedro Gonzalez and the other heat race winner, Frenchman Frederic Vialle, before developing a modest lead . While H ugh es cruised out in fron t, Huffman w as tearing up the track on his factory-backed Suzu ki RM125. By the halfway point, Huffman had worked his way up to sixth after running as far back as 19th, and was far from finis he d . He soon passed Via lie, then Decker an d, with three laps to go, he was closing in on Gonzalez. With only a lap to go, Huffman passed Gonzalez and took off after Hu gh es. Huffman closed to within earshot of the Kawasaki rider, but tim e ran .out and Hughes sailed over the finish-line jump with his first victory in hand. Standing on the top spo t on the p od ium wa s an emotional mom en t fo r Hugh es, who was ecstatic ab ou t his big win, but hea r tbroken that his fa th er couldn't ha ve been there to [oin him. . Holding the trophy above his head, Hughes yelled, "This is for you, dad." Later, Hughes sa id, "Everyth ing has been going so bad lately, I thought to myself on the (starting) line, 'Ju st go for it, what do ya have to lose?' Once I built up my lead, I thought I had it. I just kept th in k in g about m y dad, how he is watching and taking care of me on the track." "After I crashed, I thought maybe the top 10, se ve nth or eighth, but I ne ver th ought I would finish second," said Huffman, who sported a bloody fing er a nd a bruised leg , resulting from the first-turn pile-up. "The start was a little hokey and guys carne in on me fr om both sides. Two guys locked bars and went into me. The airbox on my bike almost got ripped off and it kept catching on m y boot. After the crash, I pushed the whole time; put everything I had into it. I found some excellent lines and used them every time. I also have to give a lo t of credit to my bike - it was awesome. "Overall, I guess I'm a little disappointed , but I really ca n ' t compla in. Pedro is second in points and I finished ahead of him; that's the best way to look at it," said Huffman. "I lost my head in the race," said Gonzalez. "My mechanic told me he (H u ffm an ) was corning; I made some mistakes and he passed me." Decker held on to finish fourth, while eN Vialle completed the top five. (Left)You can 'tteli it from this photo, but Mike Kiedrowski had his best ride of the season so far. He crashed two turns from the finish trying to chase down McGrath. KIedrowski ended up s econd.
