1HE1994 YEARBOOK (Litt) and Charlie (Venegas); the y've all got a 'Y' pattern. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. So I joined 'em and now I' m gonna sta rt beating 'em. I think 1 can do IS HERE! it. ~, Webb played a st rong, silen t ro le, making the main by virtue of tw o consisten t wins and a second-place finish in his third ride to remain even with Venegas an d Faria. "I seem to ha ve gotten my set-up figured ou t," Webb said. "The tire has to work for the rider and I've got my tire working for me . It might not work for someone else." Curry was having his share of problems and he po sted onl y one win in the three rounds, forcing him to ri d e the LCQ. But a convincing win in the LCQ put him on th e back row for the main event. As the top si x scorers of the night ro lle d to th e line for th e main event, Venegas lin ed up in the adva n tage ous pole po sition with Webb and Faria to his right. Curry had the insi de of row two w it h Colorado riders Buck Blai r and Mike Jaudon rounding ou t the field. Wh en the tapes wen t up, Venegas and Fari a bolted the first tum, leaving the sand wiched Webb third off the line. Venegas held a slight advantage over Fa r ia going into turn one but overcooked it and fell off the po le. Faria took advantage by squaring off the tum an d coming up the inside of Venegas as the two accelerated down the back straight. Going into tum three, Faria was slightly behind Venegas bu t tried to stuff it in underneath him. The tw o riders mad e hea vy con tact an d we re sent tumbling into the safety pads that lined the track. The race wa s red-flagged as Faria and Venegas got up and checked over their equi pment. Referee Dave Joi ner ruled tha t the accident was incidental and allowed both riders to restart. The second go was a virtual carbon copy of the first, bu t this time Faria's gamble wouldn 't payoff. Venegas controlled the start and commanded the inside line to tum one. Faria tried to get a drive around the outside but went down. The race continued w ith the Rock N Java/Troy Lee Designs / Airwalk Shoes/ Motion Pro/Motul/D&F Engineering/ Cirello/ Anna and Vari ck Racing /Will Co sta Trucking /KG Lea the rs/ Shoeisponsored Venegas stretching his lead at every tum as Webb and Cu rry slip ped into second and third . Venegas so d omina ted th e main even t that he literally shut it off down the back straight on the last lap and coasted thro ugh tum four to take the checkered flag ahead of Webb, Curry, Blair an d Jaudon. Faria finished out the main in last place. "Things worked out for me," Vene gas said. "It was tough. Guys are going real well . My ha t's off to Mik e Faria, he 's a good sportsman . I had a little trouble with the ice at the beginning of the night, and 1 had to make a few changes. But the changes worked the right way, and I p ut it together." Venegas's main even t victory at the San Diego roun d was his ninth, allowing him to surpass Warren Diem for second on the ICE all-time main even t winners list. Leader Gary Ford has 10, and with Ford lon g since retired, Ven ega s has a shot at becoming the all-time main even t winner on the ice before the end of the series. £N San Diego Sports Arena San Diego, California Results: January 28, 1994 (Round 3 of 4) MAI N: 1.
