Goodman remains on arol a Topeka' By Pam Lambert TOPEKA, KS, JAN21-22 rayson Goodman took complete advantage of the competition aboard his Dallas Honda/ LCS/Dunlop/Oakley/Jeff Long-sponsored CR12S, sweeping both classes on Friday and Saturday night to jump into the series points lead at round five of the Tucker-Rocky /ProLite AMA National Arenacross Series in the Kansas ExpoCentre. "I hope my win was a great birthday present for my dad, who is here watching me tonight, but I'm just glad to be in the points lead now," Goodman said. "I hope I can hold on to it because when (Jimmy) Gaddis and (Billy) Whitley come back it's going to be tough." G FRIDAY Frid ay night's 12Scc main event bega n with five-time National Arenacross Champ ion Dennis Hawthorne grabbing the holeshot with Goodman right behind him. Goodman wasn't about to settle for second and made his move quickly on lap three, passing Hawthorne through the whoops. Goodman never faltered and cruised around in the lead while the racing went on behind him. Doug Stone, on' an Answer lOury /Scott / Acerbis/RK/ Excel-backed KX, hammered Hawthorne lap after lap looking for a way past. Shawn Morgan also moved up from a mediocre start to pass Roy Schellenberger and Carl Hansen for fourth place. Hawthorne held second until a bobble through the doubles gave Stone the opporutnity to pass. Morgan also dogged Hawthorne, relegating him to the fourth position. As the race unfolded, Goodman cruised through lapped traffic to take the win with Stone finish ing second. Morgan, Schellenberger and Hawthorne rounded out the top five. Goodman also proved to be unstoppable in the 250cc main event, grabbing the holeshot and leading from w ire to wire. Schellenberger, Morgan and Stone formed a train, tying up second, third and fourth. Trey Owens provided some excitement by moving his Yamaha of Oklahoma/Scoobs/Baker Boys YZ2S0 through the pack after a poor start to finish fifth. SATURDAY Hawthorne again nailed the lead off •the line with Tinney and Morgan in tow. Goodman was mired in the pack several places behind the leaders. Hawthorne pulled ahead of Tinney slightly while Goodman had p icked off riders and began to challenge Tinney for second. Goodman again tripled cleanly past Tinney and set his sights on Hawthorne, and the win . Goodman pulled up alongside through the whoops and made a block pass in the next tum. Hawthorne went down, and Goodman took control of the lead while Tinney slipped back into second. Morgan continued to hold third while Owens moved up from eighth to fourth. When the checkered flag came out, Goodman took the win followed by Tinney, Morgan, Owens and Woolsey. . In Saturday's 250cc main, Goodman was again flawless as he punched it off the start and never looked back. Goodman styled his Honda CR250 to the win, followed to the finish by the Kawasakimounted quartet of Morgan, Stone, Schellenberger and Hawthorne. Bradley Ripple thrilled the crowds with his jumping ability on a stock YX50 as he raced to Pee Wee class wins on both nights.
