Renauxroosts to LACR Motocross victory By Greg Robertson PALMDALE,CA,jAN.16 Ken Renau x took top hon ors in the Old Timers MX Association Mast er class with a 1-2 score durin g California Racing Club' s Sunda y motocross at Los Angeles County Raceway. Renaux timed the first moto ga te perfectly to take an early lead over Gary Willison, Tony Parsons and Jack Kell. Kell was the first to make a 28 mov e, d iv ing under Williso n in a tum to tak e over second . Kell qu ickly zeroed in on Renaux and started lookin g for pa ssin g roo m . Going into a tigh t left hand tum Kell got a little anxio us a nd h it Renau x' s rear w heel, losi ng momentum and allowing Willison to rail around him an d back into seco nd place. Kell retaliated im media tely, push ing Willison back in to third but began slowing a short time la ter, evid en tly feeling th e effects of a recent bout with the flu. Willison again found himseU in second place behind Renaux. David Rogers and Jim Draves were working up from midpack starts to challenge Willison by the fifth lap . Rogers out-jumped Willison to move into second with Draves doing the same a short time later for third. Willison wo uld eventually drop off the pace to finis h seventh. Renaux had no problem with the pace and continued on, lead ing every lap, to ta ke the firs t moto victory. Rog ers an d Draves stayed within a turn of Renaux all the way to the finish for second and third place, respectively. Kell held on for fourt h ove r Mike Chesbro who' d worked up from last to fifth. JAN.9 Craig Hump hrey p ow ered his Hump hrey's Plumbing/D-H Cycles / O' Neal-sponsor ed Suzuki to three main even t wins at the 11th running of the Mike Kidd-promoted "Nothing Bu t Air Tour '94" Arenacross at the famed Cow Palace . After esta blishing himself as one of the more capable riders in his heat race, Humphrey went to the line in his first finaL the 125cc Intermediate class . At the snap of the rubber start mechanism, Humphrey came off the line first, through tum one with no trouble and attacked the whoop sectio n to establish an earl y lead . Running a distant second was Mike Gonzales and thir d was Jason Mathews, while back in fourth was Matt Kirar. The order changed on the second lap wh en Mathews moved into second an d began to d uplicate th e mass ive leaps o ff th e double ju m p approa ch ramp that were being performed by Humphre y. The o rder d idn 't change from th at poin t until the checke rs. Humphrey scared hi mself, and his supporters, on the last lap when he landed poorly after the tricky medi um-heigh t doubles preceeding the finish line straight; he had both feel off the footpegs and was laying over the hand leb ars for several wobbly mo ments befo re regaining his balance and d rive. Humphrey's seco nd class wi n came in the 250cc Intermediate class quite late in the pr ogram. Chris Baccelli on a Honda grabbe d the holeshot but was followed closely by Humphrey un til Mathews passed Humphrey in mid-air off the big jum p. The mistakes were taking their toll on Humphrey as he wa s then bumped back to fourth wh en Shawn Parks got by on a Kawasaki. Parks kept charging and got to second place by lap th ree when Humphrey was apparently just getting into a rhythm. By then it was too late for Humphrey to better his positio n and he settled for a fourth place behind winner Chris Baccelli , Shawn Parks and Mathews. Humphrey led off the line in the last race of the day, the 125cc Open class, and he launched so energetically off the ramp that he improved his lead by double the distance he'd had pri or to that. Running sec ond wa s Hawk Wh ite; third was Jeff Borcha rd . By midrace, Humphrey wa s nearly a half lap ahead and took the eas y win over White and Borchard. Results 50 P / W MOO: 1.
