Caleb Leath took the lead off the gate in the

h unt for the lead . Bogard wicked up his RM in
the short section wh oops jus t past the rockers
and shot past Leath at the end of the first lap to
ass u me the lea d . As the w hite flag ca me ou t,
Bo g ard go t ca ug h t in th e sa n d o f th e long
wh oop sectio n, allowing Leath to close the ga p.
Bo g ard was a b le to sa v e h im self fro m th e
mishap, but his loss of pr eciou s seconds opened
the door, and the two rid ers engaged in a wheelto-wheel ba ttle for the lead. At the chec kered
flag. Bogard managed to hold off Leath for the
win. Bowyer, Marquez and Earl Kephart rounded out the top five.

CR250 rider Pau l Barnes dominated their respective Beginner classes d uring Californi a Racin g
C lu b 's Happy N e w Yea r Grand Prix a t Los
Angeles County Raceway.
Bob Ha usman got the jum p on the rest of the
125cc Beginners 10 lead the first lap. Townsend
wa s running a close second followed by Tyler
Buck, Jason Hoffman and Lewis Stephan. A battl e qu ickly developed for th e lead betw een
Hausman and Townsend as the two riders separated themsel ves from the rest of the pack.
Townsend was dogging Hausman and fmalIy found a way around on the fourt h of w hat
would be a 12-lap race on the fast sand track.
Hoffman overtook Buck for third while Victor
Banuelos worked up to fifth from his last-place
start. Hausman hung close to Townsend, keeping him honest up un til the 10th lap when he
seemed to tire out. The Scotts Performance/Jack
In The Box-backed Townsend kept his pace up
and pu lled away to gr eet th e checkered flag
with nearl y a 3Q.second lead over Hausman.
The 2SOa: Beginner class was a Paul Barn es
benefit. Barn es grabbed the holes hot off the
d ead engin e start and n ever looked back. The
real race was for the runner-up position between
Donald Fett er, Warren Tittlenuer and Kyle Frazier. Fetter ra n in the seco nd spot early in the
rac e before succu mb in g to pressure fro m Tit tlem ier o n the th ird lap. Fetter sta yed w ithi n
striking distance of Tittlemier un til the halfway
po in t when he p ulled off the track w ith p roblems. Tittlem ier contin ued on to fin ish seco nd
well behind Barn es, but an equal d istance ahead
of Frazier in third.

The last race of the Yamaha Go ld Cup drew a
record 285 riders on Sunday at the Sale m Arenacros s, a nd p la yed h os t to intense actio n
between Ryan Huffman and Roby Leach, who
sha red wins in the 125 and 2SOcc Pro classes.
In the 2SOa: Pro mot o one, Huffman gabbed
the holeshot followed closely by Leach. It was a
tigh t race until mis fortu ne fell up on Huffma n
while going through a series of jumps. A lapped
rider went o u t of co n tro l and moved und er
H uffman who was in mi d -a ir a nd le ft w it h
nowhene to land except on lop of the lapper. The
mishap allowed Leach 10 pass for the first mota
w in. Huffman re mo unted but had to settle for
third behind Terry Hamness.
In mota two , H uffma n on ce again clai med
the holeshot but took th e moto w in this time
with Leach taking seco nd an d Hamness th ird .
Roby Leach scored the overall victory with his 12 placin gs. Huffm an was sec ond o ve rall and
Hamness third.

In moto two, Hig hland go t the jump on
Huffman and a battl e ensued. On lap two, Huffman made a dive at Highl and in to a left hand
tum trying 10 stuff a wh eel under him 10 make
the pass , but Hig hland slammed the d oor . On
lap fou r, Huffman made his move and pa ssed
Highland, wh o then tried to regain the lead, but
H uffma n he ld his line and the y b oth went
down. Both rid ers remoun ted wit h Huffman up
first to take the second -moto and ove rall win.
In 125ee In te rmed ia te action, Ryan Leach
made two per fect starts and left the rest of the
field behind for the overall win. Cory Fuller had
two grea t starts in both motos of the 2SOcc class
b u t Leach w as in hot pursuit and soo n prevailed. In mo to one, Leach passed Fuller on the
first lap and wen t on for the win. In malo two ,
Fulle r was able to ho ld off Leach for jus t two

Brunkal was faced with his toughest competiti on of the n ight in the 125ee Intermediate
class, th is com ing from Williams. Brunkal put
his Salem Honda-sponsored CR 10 the head of
the field in the first mota while Williams, Dan
Hansen and Kauffman gave chase. Brunkal and
Will iam s were never more than a wheel apart
the en tire mot a; Brun kal netted the moto win
whiJe Williams, Ha nse~ Kauffman a nd Derek
Jasper filled in the top five at mota 's end.
Lone pro Tom Cr ew s put his Suzuki out
front in moto two and appeared to be a runaway
winner, onl y to crash and allow.Williams past.
Brunkal wa s buried in traffic and had a tough
time ge tting aroun d a trio of riders. He finally
succeeded , but by that lime Williams had a comfortab le lead :md held to the finish for the ove,all win over Brunka l (1-2) and Hansen (3-4).
