Fortunately, the fuel on/off/reserve switch is accessible while riding; it's located on the left side just underneath the gas tank. There is very little in the way of instrumen tation. A single, chrome-plate d cyli n der house s the s peedometer / od ometer / trip meter assembly, and that's about it, except for a small clus ter of in dicator lig h ts u nderneath the speedometer. Th e ign ition is also mo un ted on the left side of the bike, just behin d the rear cylinder, and a separate steering lock is located on the frame's stee ring stem. The 22-yea r-old Beattie survived a grueling race that had four different leaders. Beattie ended up topping Schwantz by less than one second after fellow Australian teammate Mick Doohan was forced out of the race with only two laps to go due to a suspected lire failure.
