Sean McG loin Yonkers, NY Willing to help I wanted to write a note to let you kn ow tha t I will be making The Clayton Found ation my " charity o f choice" a nd I want to challenge others to do the same. Of course I will con tinue to give food, used clothing, household items, and my time to local charities, but as for cash donations, I plan on giving to The Gayton Foundation. I am very grateful to the foundation for the help it has provided for our friends and others. I am optimistic in hoping that we will never need assistance from The Clayton Foundation personally, but I am also realistic in knowing that until you are placed in a simi lar situation you just never know what all is invo lved. Ma ndie R. Wilson Kent, WA Mandi e Wilson is the wife of dirt tracker Don Wilson...Editor. Luck of the Iri sh 2 It has come to my attention, based on y o u r comment to m y lette r (Voices, Issue #1), that not only do yo u not print the facts straight, but yo u also see m to be the typical stereotype. Yes, I too am Ir ish, like Robert Dunlop and Jeremy McWilliams, but, sir, I don't drink Guinness . Perhaps Mr . Dunlop and Mr. McWilliams travel with British passports. This, I know, happens to be one of the few privileges of living in such a wartorn society as Northern Ireland . But based on my knowledge of this subject, most people from Ulster do travel with Iri sh passports as Ireland is a neutral country, therefore allowing its citizens to travel to foreign lands more freely. I would like to think, Mr. Editor, if you asked Robert Dunlop or Jeremy McWilliams where .they were from, the reply wo ul d be Ir e la n d . My frie n d, p lease d ea l w ith the issu es concerning mo torcycling and try to avoid the supermarket-style tabloid com ments. For the record, Mr. Ca rruthers, I do take offense at the ass umption that I am a typical Gu inness-d rinkin g Irishman . My previou s leiter to you was wri tte n purely to correct what I considered to be an overlook of the facts, not to raise a political issue. Regardless of where I am CycleNews (USI'S 141·3oW) is publishedweekl except tho y l.lst two weeks of the calendar year for sso.oo per year by CycleNews. tee, 2201CherryAv enue, Long Beach. CA 90806. One of the most vivi d recollections of my childhood was a trip to Belfast in August of 1969 for tire Ulster Grand Prix. The memory is clear because of the fear we feIt from being in the war-torn city of Belfast. I in no way meant to slight yourself, Robert Dunlop or Jeremy McWiIIiams, for my comments which were made purely in jest. After all, my mother's maiden name is McFadden, making me at least half lrish...Editor. Upset I was mildly upset with the sophomoric article "Ba ttle of the Mo ns te r Bikes " (Issue #50, January 5). The who le ton e of the piece was se t w ith a negati ve bias, and a series of snide remarks about not only the bikes themselves, but also th e thousands of people that ride them . The writers of the article reinforce th e old adage, "Do not send boys to d o a ma n's job." Next comes a good lelle r from Randy Rattaro (Voices, Issu e #1) chastising the aforem entioned "s hoo tout" and obvious big bore phobia of the authors. Not willing to let thin gs stand at tha t, the editor count ers with what I consider an ex tremely cheap shot at the KTM 550 MXC! I have been a KTM dealer for a number of years and have sold hundreds of open cla ss KTMs. My customers and m yse lf feel personally offended by the tone being set by Cycle News and other industry publications against open classes and KTM itself. We as a sport and industry cannot afford this type of negative journalism. I think an apology is in order. Brad Teegarden Roseville, CA We have nothing against Open class motor-. cycles, the Open class itself or KTM. The remark made about the KTM 550 EXC was a joke. Plainand simple...Editor. Nostalgia lover I loved the Nostalgia article in the Janua ry 5 iss ue (30 Yea rs of Cycle N ews, Issue #50). Wh ile I was yo ung rider in the late 60s an d 70s, I use d to cu t articles out of Cycle News an d tape them up on my bedroom door. My favorite quote has always been: "If you happen to run ou t of duct tape, I find that a nut and bolt or a good strong weld will make an accepta ble subs titution." For riders of those days, we all unders tan d tha t m a ch in es like m y Suzu ki TS 125 needed lots of help to stay together. As an off-roa d racer, I en joy the raced ay articles and as a stree t rid er I enjoy yo ur street bike articles. Before I moved fro m California to Alabama in 1989, I didn 't understand why the ea st coast folks always worried about the weather aJl th e time. Woods here have these th ings call trees that h ave forced this dese rt ra cer to get b a rk b u ste rs and learn how to ride roots and red mud. I wo uld like to see more articles about land closures and how to fight the Sierra Club and the "politically correct." -My nephews in California will never be able to ride the areas we rod e in the 70s, bu t I w rite lett ers all the time to keep the cu rrent land open to all users. I hope the west coast never ends up havin g to ride on priva te lan d on ly like all th e east coast off-road riders. Ed Larosche Hu ntsvi1Je, AL He likes it As a fellow member of the magazinge publishing community and a racing fan, I want to congratulate you on your Cycle News redesign. The new look is much more reader friendly and pleasing to the eye. The positive changes are also evident in the editorial content. Your back page column and "Looking Back" are welcome and entertaining additions. For as long as I have read Cycle News, I have always considered your coverage of the motorcycle world very professional. I now consider the presentation of the coverage of the same quality.
