DEC 12 Eric Mashbir began his defense of the 1994 D-36 Cross Coun try Championsh ip just as he d id last year, with another win, at the 2 + 2 M/C's 18th annual Cow Punch er Hare Scramble at Hollister HilIsOHV. As the field completed lap one, Dan Reger was first through the home check with Mashbir a close second and Pat Garrahan third, on e mi nute ahead of Brian Garrahan. Cu rt Wilcox was fifth through the check, riding a Husaberg, in front of Rod Smith and Cole Marshall, giving the ISDE riders an edge over the motocrossers. Steve Hatch was threatening Smit h for second place, running three minutes behind him. Mashb ir started lap five with a one minute ad van tage on Hatch, while Smith had a blown head gasket on his Suzuki. Mashbir just bea t the checkered flag to go through for a sixth lap and virtually ensure the overall win while Hatch was forced to stop and fix a flat rear tire. Mason didn't stop for anything, despite a pit crewman yelling at him to check the fuel situation. Hatch left the pit nearly a minu te behind Mason , pa ss ing him ju st prior to the end.of their sixth lap to recap ture second place. Feroce Sportswear/Bentley Cycles-backed Mike Jones won th ree of four Pr o main events at rounds si x an d seven of the Action Sp or ts Indoor Motocross Series in the Hun tington Civic Center. Jones was th e pr e-ra ce favorite for Saturday's 12Sec main, but Chad Lough grabbed the holeshot with jones right behind him. Honda of Troy /Pro Circuit / AXO s ta r Todd De Ho op nearly flipped coming off the start but found a gap in the first tum and came through in third ahea d of james Eickel, DeHoop wasted no time ge lling by Lough in the infield double jumps and set ou t after jones. Back in the pack, a fiveri d er ba tt le fo r fifth ensued between Brad Strunk, je romy Buehl, Shane Lawson, Kurt McMillen and Chuck Reed . Lawson cra shed a ft er the w hoo ps s ection, th en Strunk and Buehl began .to gai n on Eickel. The d ifficult track provided much of the excitement as all of th e front-runners had to make mirac ulous sa ves jus t to stay o n tw o whee ls . De Hoo p caug ht up to Jones at th e halfway poi nt, but bobbled in the w hoops to give jones breathing room . Eickel was able to reel in Lough, but then a mistake forced Eickel to regroup as Strunk cha llenged him for fourth . jones carved his way th rough lapped riders and opened up a small lead , taking the win with DeHo op right beh ind him at the finish. Jones got a g rea t s ta rt in the 250cc ma in a hea d of Lough a nd DeH oop . Once aga in DeHoop dove unde r Lough after the two sets of infield doub les to take ov er seco nd. Buehl, Eickel and Dav id Ha nd chas ed the leaders. DeHoop took advantage of jones's miscues to reel him in. Buehl got knocked off the track and fell ou t of the top 10. Mark Musselman, Strunk, Hand and Lawso n too k advantage of Buehl' s misfortun e as they battled for fifth. Lough and Eickel were. running alone in the th ird and fourth sp ots, res pecti ve ly - positions they would hold to the finish . Del-loop caugh t jones but was una ble to make a pass stick as the two longtim e rivals du eled to gain the upper hand in the turns. jones was able to hold onto the top spot a nd grab hi s seco nd w in of th e n igh t. DeHoop finished in second ahead of Lough and Eickel. Jones came back on Sunda y to finish second beh ind Ch uck Reed in the 125cc main but was able to post another win in the 250cc main.
