That's all Brandes needed, as he quickly
locked up the brakes, cut tight to the
inside and passed both Smiths to take
second with Rodney Smith d ropping to
third while Butch Smith was forced into
fourth.
At the midway point of the third lap,
Brandes would wait no longer and
forced his way around Allen at the top
of the midsection uphill-downhill loops
for the lead. Butch Smith passed Rodney
Smith for third and then both of them
got by Allen. Butch Smith then focused
in on Brandes and passed him on the
bottom hairpin comer of th e freeway
downhill to take the lead.
For the next two laps, Brandes and
Rodney Smith waged a furious battle for
second and third position with Rodney
Smith passing Brandes and settling into
second. Butch Smith continued to lead
the race and would eventually take the
moto win convincingly ahead of Rodney
Smi th.
In moto two, Rodney Smith .pulled
the hol eshot with Butc h Sm it h hot on
his tail. Tyler Hummel ran third and
quickly tried to pass Butch Smith on
the Godzilla downhill. As Rodney
Smith hammered the Godzilla downhill
he began to swap, butthe Suzuki rider
held on tight and muscled the bike
back into a straight line. Butch Smith,
who had used the freeway downhill to
make passes throughout the day, once
again found it to be the best place to
pass. He tried to pass Rodney Smith
again, but the Suzuki rid er was wise to
the move and held off the Honda of

125cc Pro class while Michael Brandes sailed to vic tory in th e 250cc
Pro cla ss a t the openi ng round of th e
Bieffe USA/CMA 1994 California Winter Series.
When the gate dropped for mo to one
of the 125cc Pro class , Greg Allen pulled
the holeshot, followed by Suzuki's Rodne y Sm ith and .th e Race Accessories/
Rhin oskins Honda of Butch Smith. Battling for the fourth spot were Brandes
and Rusty Holland. .
As the riders came into view on the
Godzill a downhill, it was still Allen
lead ing th e field . Rodney Smith and
Butch Smith were side by side as they
reached the bottom of the hill. Brandes
saw Butch Smith try to go inside and
force Rodney Smith high to the outside.
