Speedway rider Donny Odom made his flat track debUt on Mike Hale 's 883 Harley David son, which was borrowed from Bartels H-D of
Marina del Key, but it was Rick Hutchins who
scored the 883 class win as the sound of thunder
and the Southern California Flat Track AssocIation came to Glen Helen Raceway.
When the green flag dropped at the start of
the 883 main, Ron Bartels grabbed the holesho t
while Hutchins quickly mad e h is move to the
second spot. Odom charged by Fredd ie Orosco
for third. Hutchins was wo rking the track high
and low, and in lap four finally stuck his wheel
under Bartels for the pass. Odom, who had finished first in the heats, saw the halfway flag and
turned it on to rocket by Bartels for second and
se t a fte r Hutchins. Odam was pressuring
Hutchins, who'd found the groove he liked and
was looking to the checkered. At the checkered
it was Hutchins with the win, Odom second and
Bartels third.
The track was grooved and fast for the 2.5Occ
Main. Dennis Briggs took h is Yamaha to the
front at the start and never shut off, but Jim Rosa
and Zimm Udovich me t the challenge. Rosa slid
through the turns with precision, stuffing a
wheel under Briggs, then working the high
groove. But Briggs, with a little more traction,
held the charging Rosa off. When Rosa bobbled
at the halfway flag, Briggs turned it up a little
more. With a few lap s to go, Briggs and Rosa
came into a little traffic, and Rosa took advantage by closing the gap. With one lap to go, Rosa
hooked it up a nd was sliding side by side
through the final tum with Briggs. But Briggs
had a little more power and come home with the
win. Rosa took ho me second.
The fans were ready for the l OOcc Main as
the heats had been clas sic. At the green flag,
three riders slid through tum one: Larry Spekto r, Jim Rosa and Denn is Briggs . Th e lead
changed so many times it was hard to keep
score, but final lap leader Rosa went high, and it
as was Spektor cross ing the finish line first.
