ORLANDO CITRUS BOWL - JANUARY 15, 1994 - 7:30 PM he p reviously unbeaten Lamson the in. "Brian never actually blocked me, but t would have been nicer if he had been ehind me," said Lamson. "They we re ood with the blue flags later when we ught up to the other lappers," Indeed, it would appear that the flagen were oblivio us to the fact tha t wi nk was a lap down as the y la te r lue-flagged Schmit to let him pass. Most eyes however were firmly inned on crowd favorite Cooper. By .d-race he was up to third and closing own on the leaders rapidly. Then on he 12th of 16 laps, having just d isodged Lamson from second, "Airtime" ot off at the end of the whoops. With his bars drooping, anybody else ould have pulled off, but no t Cooper. e leapt back on, having lost only one lace to Tichenor, and s till jumped very thin g in sight. At the big triple, he ctually took both hands off the bars to ang the levers back up while 20 feet up the air over a 6O-foot-long obstacle! And so the race ended, with Coop er inishi n g fo u rth befo re going to the odi um to be crowned champion of the orld and receive a $25,000 check from he FIM. Ward, Lamson and Tichenor ot fat checks from race sponsor Lucky trike . Tragter advanced to a well-earned ifth, just 28 seconds behind winner ard, after starting the race two places urther back than even Cooper. The Saturday crowd (once again, the on-championship race was a sell-out) ere trea ted to some superb racing in e qualifiers, none being better than the ird heat which was eventually won by re nchma n Frederic Vialle, with nonualifier Erik Kehoe only eight seconds ack in a race which had six changes of eadership. Cooper was more erratic than ever, ing back from a second-lap crash to ust qualify from his semi. Swink took dv antage of a late mistake by Ward to in , w h il e the crowd lo ved it when echien sto le th e ot her semi w ith a mooth ride. Two crashes in that race ent Tragter to the LCQ where he and uedard started too bad ly to ever have chance. The fina l was Ward' s race all the ay. He holeshot and simply ran away d hid as closest chasers Lamson and wi n k each crashed d ownfield while rying to close in on him. The artisan mso n even tu ally reco vered back to and was closing rap idly in the final ps, but Ward's win was never in daner. Cooper had gone down after clipping he rea r wheel of Lamson' s Honda in he first turn, but was poised to push ehoe out of the first six, on lap 10 of 16, ntil he cartwheeled over the double . d the start gate and was eliminated or good. Tichenor and Lawr ence also crashed ut of the top six, and their elimination ased the pressure on Lechien as he ode calmly to third, just out of reach of ughes who had started so badly. a esults FRI DAY: 1.
