"I really can 't ride one no matter how tight the terr ain is." The racers were begin ning to settle into strid e as the second hall of the figure eight be ga n . Colorado's Donnie Book was 20 seconds behind Zilterkopf fo r fif th overall in the time-adjusted st an dings. Ond as was sixth ahead of Paul Krause, an d Bryan Folks held third 250cc Pro in seven th. Scot Ha rden's K1M was at the head of the Over-30 Pro pa ck in 10th overall and Stephen Tichenor was lead ing the 125cc Pro field . The 27-mile second half of the figure eigh t was a lit tle more open than the first half and speeds started to increase as the riders followed the ribbo ned trail out to the east. Bu t while the pace mounted a t the fro nt of the pack, the casualties were sta rting to mount a little furth er back. Ray Je we t t disappeared from the running near the midway poin t, a nd Utah racer Jeff Lun dgreen crashed five miles off the start. Fred Willert's bid for 125cc Pro honors bit the d ust before it even began when his Honda CR125's transmission went out on the jetting loop more than an hour before race time . Mechanical gremlins were also stalking Yamaha pilot James Loh, "I had a whole bunch of problems," said Loh . "I had two front flats , and a radiator clamp broke - I had to fix that out on the trail and I lost all my water. I fell six times, too; it wasn't hard - just stupid little stuff. But the flat tire an d rad iator killed me." Ha mel completed the second hall of the loop with no problems an d still held the physical lead, but he headed into the seco nd circuit of the course like a man possessed after his pit crew told him that Davis had been a minute ahead on time at the last pit. The news w as e ven worse when Davis hit pit row at the end of his first full loop of the course. The 10<250 racer had pulled even more time on Hamel and was now a minute and 15 seconds ahea d, on adjusted time, d espite running out of gas a mile from the pits . "This is a 1994 10<250 and they don 't m ake a n o ther tank for it ye t," sa id Davis. "I was carrying gas, but it still cost me some time:' The tank cost even more time when the 10<250 reached the pit. Instead of the dry-brake set-up that had Hamel gassed and gone in 10 seconds flat, Davis' refuel was a 25-second ordeal that included removing and refitting a stock, screw-on gas cap, but Davis still left with the lead and showed no signs of slowing down. Zitterkopf raced into the second loop in third overall, two-and-a-hall min u tes behind Davis, after battling long and hard to hold his 250cc Pro rival at bay. "Zitterkopf was holding me up and he knew he was. A couple of times we nearly tangled," said Davis. "When I finally got past him, I just stuffed him, I made him hit the brakes, then I never saw him after that:' Book powered through in fo urth, Ondas held fifth and CRSOO racer John Flores ha d r ocke ted u p fr om 15 th ha lfway thro ugh the loop to sixth in the time-a djus ted sta ndings in his first nonSCORE desert race. Kra use cleared the pits in seven th ahead of Harden, who was comfortably in front of his Over-3D Pro rivals. Colorado's Jim Gray had wo rked his way th rough the dust fro m the back of the 250cc Pro pack to grab ninth in his first race on a KTM, an d Tichenor was still
