MOTOCROSS Arenocross '93 Lewis hits jackpot in Reno By Joan Tieamey and Dickie D ye Photos by George Ruiz RENO, NY, NOV. 19-21 yle Lewis stole the show with wins in the 250cc class both Friday and Saturda y nig h ts w hile Cory Keen ey a nd La nce Sm ail sp lit main event wins in the 125cc class at the third annual Nev ada Arenocross produced by On Trac Events, Robert Hansen and Jim Ho lley, which took place at the Ren o Livestock Event Center . Brought to Reno by Po rt of Subs, Yamaha Motor Corporation, Budweiser and Scolari's Markets, racing action was in the usual supe rcross style with heats, semis and last chance qua lifiers. Several riders traveled far to get to this event. All the way from Eng land , Dean Logsda le and Sta cy H armon compe te d to mak e it into the main even t. Oklahoma rid er s Trey and Jason Owens, and Ty Harris also gave it their best. The packed are na came to life when th e bik es flew off the sta rting ga te. In Fr id a y ' s 125cc main e ve n t, Sm ail 'grabbed the holeshot followed by Tyson Vohlan d, Keeney, Scott Myers, Trey Owens and Lewis. Smail held his blazing pace as the rest of the riders jockeyed for pos ition. Lewis, who was seventh on the s ta rt, stead ily worked his w a y u p to seco nd b y lap n in e and passed Keeney after the whoop section. Up front it was smoo th sailing for Smail, wh o rod e a perfect, I S-lap main eve n t for the victory. Lew is finis he d secon d and Keeney third. Ku rt McMill en finished four th, with Dan Ulven completing the top five. Kyle Lewis was the early favorite coming into the 250cc main event, winn ing hi s heat race ea rly. He would be joined by 250cc hea t wi nners Keeney, Terry Pa rsons, Bu tc h Sm ith, Harris, Sm ail , Voh land a n d Ru st y H oll and . Al so in the line were se m i fi nishers Lowell Moura l [r ., McMillen, Myers and Trey Owens. Some of the local favorites K 22 m ad e it to the se mis a nd LCQ, b ut crashes and injuries ha lted their hopes un til the next night's racing. When the gate dropped it looked as thou gh Keeney would get the lead bu t Lewis mane uvered his Noleen Yamaha to the first tu rn and ju mp ed in to the lead , leavin g the rest of the field. Smail fought to catch up to third w hi le Par• son s railed his Kawasaki past Smit h to take over fourth. Holland and McMillen battled in fifth and sixth wi th H olland com ing ou t ahead in that battle. When all w a s raced and done, Lewis ha d no tched a popular win. Second place belonged to Keeney, and Smail settled . for third . Parsons and Hol1and rounded out the top five. . Saturday night's action wa s just as electrifying with Pro action, a media race a nd an ex hibition race. "Flyin" Ryan Morais d azzled the crowd and sent them to their feet as he doubled the 6S-foot triple jump on his Kawasaki KX60. Satu rday racing was fast and furious, with heat ra ces spe lling the retiremen t o f Lewis ' s 12Scc effor ts followi ng mechanical problems with his Yama ha. Kee ney improved his previous day's efforts by two positions to take the win in his heat race . McMillen, Ulven , Parsons and Myers filled out the top five. Keeney was off the gate in first an d got the holesh ot, with Parsons, Ulve n, Mye rs and McMillen battling it ou t behind the lead er. On the 11th lap the bat tl e fo r seco nd pl ace ex p lo d ed as Kawasaki-mounted Ulven and Big Valle y H ond a' s McMill en entered th e whoop section together. Ulven bobbled , givi ng an inch to McMillen, who took over second place. U1ven tried again to pass underneath McMillen in the horseshoe turn bu t lost momentum setting up for the triple jump . McMillen tripled bu t Ulven 'could n' t and lost second place . The crowd went crazy in the remaining four laps. Keeney set his Kawasaki on cruise to take the victory. McMillen finish ed seco n d, Ulve n third , Parsons fourth an d Myers fifth. . Saturday's 250cc main event brough t 12 rid er s to the line. Owens, Parsons, Sm ith, H olland , Moural [r., Smail, Lewis, Mye r s, Kee n ey, Harmon, McMillen and Jon Nickolaus all got set to d o batt le. At the start, Smith grabbed th e holeshot w ith Lewis right on his back tire th rou gh the first turn. Dow n the straightaway and over an other set of jumps, well, you guessed it - Kyle Lewis was gone. H olland ran in th ird behind Smith, Smail in four th, wi th McMi llen an d Keeney in hot pursuit . Lewis led from start to finish . In his wake, Hondamounted Smith held on to second while the battle with Sma il, McMillen and Keeney raged. Sma il crossed the finish line in third with McMillen and Keeney finishing fourth and fifth. Bri tish racer Stacy Ha rmon was the only non-American to make a ma in even t, fin ishing a creditable 10th place to the delight of the excited crowd. ~ Results Frid ay 125, 1. Lance Smail (Hon), 2.
