Cool wea ther and superb track cond itions made
for so me fast and fur iou s rid ing at Mounta in
View MX in Tucson on Sunday, and Brian Highsmith took adva ntage of those cond itions, scoring a win in the 250cc Intennediate class.
Hig hs mi th go t h is Yamaha o ff to a good
s tart in th e fir st mo te a nd held h is position
through out. Frank Pebbo p ushed him ha rd for a
lap bu t had his ow n pr oblems with Carey Kent
[r., wh o pa ssed Febbo on the second la p b ut
could not catch Highs mi th. Mike Calhoun go t
off to a bad star t and could finish no bette r than
fourth.
Febbo pu lled the holesh ot the second tim e
around with H ighsmith second and Ca lhou n
third. Highsmith and Febbo swapped the lead
five times d uring the first lap, but were sepa~t
ed on the se cond whe n Ca lhou n roared pa st
Highsm ith. They were togeth er again when Calhoun passed Febbo . Highsmith was now in third
position and pla yed it cool unt il he saw a chance
to get around Febbo in the doubles.
"I knew Febbo was the only one 1 had to
beat becau se Calhoun finished fourth in the first
mot o," Highsmi th said . "I figu red Febbo would
tire since he has n't raced much lately, and once I
got aro und him. 1just held my pos ition."
That strategy. along w ith hi s own ridin g
skills, gained Highsmith the first-place trophy.
Calhoun fared better in the 12Scc Intermediate class where he p ulled the holeshot in both
mo tos and held on all the way. Jeremy Giroir
pushed him d u rin g th e firs t moto, b ut had a
major crash on the upside face of the hill, which
p ut him out o f commissio n for the rest of the
day . Jeff Landis finished second in both motos.
Stacey Mi ller had h is w ay in the Senior
Nov ice class, w inn ing both mo te s ove r Don
Miller and Joh n Rogers wh o sp lit second and
third-place finishes,
Ronnie G ambl e Jr . d om i na ted the SOcc
Novice class while Sean Shelton, Ranel Cox and
Chris Mayo ba ttled it out for second, third and
fourth, respectively. Cox held a solid second for
three laps, bu t a persistent Shelton go t around
him and finished second. His persis tence did not
hold up in the second moto when he again star ted second but faded and finished {ourth, leaving
the third spot to Chris Mayo.

Paden powerful at
Willow Springs Road Race
By Eric Vincent
ROSAMOND,CA, NOV. 2OU21
Jason Pad en delivered a one-two pu nch whe n
he won both the Bud weiser / Toyo ta / Dunlop
Fonnula One Grand Prix and the Maxima Racing Oil Formula Two Grand Prix races d uring
the 11th round of Willow Springs Motorcycle
Club compe tition at Willow Springs Interna tional Raceway.
Paden has dominated the F-2 class this seaso n at Willow Springs and his victory in that
event in this round was all he needed to clinch
the F-2 class championship. His victory in the
F-l race was his fir st in that cla ss with the
WSMC.
It took Pad en severa l laps in the F-1 race to
move into the lead. That spot was held initally
by defend ing class cham pion Robert Miller, who
emerge d with the lead afl er o nly a few laps
desp ite a poor start off the line. At the end of the
first lap, Miller was lead ing on his ReCal Racing-sponsor ed Ho nda CBR900F with Jim Van
Vegten run ning second and Pad en in th ird. As
Van Veg ten and Pade n rod e thr ough the tight
tu rns on the racet rack, Pade n used h is nimbl e
Cin e Cam era-spo nsored Yamaha TZ250 to its
advantage and wa s ab le to pass' Van Vegten,
who was rid ing his Risky Business Rad ng-sponsored Suzuki GSXRllOO.
Howev er, Van Vegten wasn 't ready to relinquish second quite so easily, and once the riders
were in the back straigh t, applied the horsepower and re-passed Paden- A lap later, Paden once
aga in passed Van Vegten in the tight sections of
the race course, and this time Van Vegte n was
unable to move back into second.
Pade n now set his sights on Miller and a lap
af ter pa ssing Van Vegten, he used the sa me
tech nique to get past Miller in tum four . From
that po in t on, Pad en 's lead was uncha llenged
and he cruised on to tak e the ra ce win w ith
Miller finishing second and Van Vegten third .
"1 wa s the most relaxed for th is race th at
I've ever been, " said Paden after the race. "I got
a great start and decided to go for it."
In the Maxima Racing Oil Formu la Two race,
Paden came out on top of a race-long battle with
Michael Mont oya and Willie Burr.

Kohner, Hebb fast at
Evansville Short Track
By Ed Beckley
EVANSVII.I.E, IN,NOV. 12

Two d ays of short tr ack racing in Evansville
brought two d ifferent winners on two different
surfaces , as Ton y Koh ner won the Op en Pro
class at Ind iana's Roberts Municipal Stadium on
Frid ay while Dav id Hebb topped the class on
Saturday .
Friday night, the su rface wa s coated with
Coke syrup and it looked like the ult imate in
traction. But as the nigh t wore on, the humidity
rose and made the Coke syrup gooey and hard
to neg otiate. Last yea r's M.S.A. indoor champion, Hebb , put. his Ha rley -Davidson ou t front,
an d it looked like he had the race in the bag
until the last comer when he slowed to straigh ten up and w he eli e across the fin ish lin e. As
Hebb wa s stylin', Ton y Kohner p u t his Frontenac Honda 600 across the finish line ahead of
the "wheelie King" for the win . Hebb was second by a wheel, and Kirk Jen ne ma n fin ished
third .
.
O n Sa turda y, the tr ack crew went to the
build ing to find the floor in a mess.
"The floor's su rface was abo ut the consistency of chocolate syrup," said Stan Mueh1hausen,
the M.S.A. track official.
Crews strip ped the floo r to the concrete and
then sp rayed it with tra cti on com pou nd . That
pr oved to be the solutio n to the traction problem
as rid ers were four wide in the comers, d ragging thei r handl eba rs, and goi ng fast. Joey
Duva ll sa t on the pol e for th e main with a
Kawasaki 250 motocrosse r, the first rider to do
that in .th ree years o f the M.S.A. series. Duvall
