O n b eha lf of the Tri-State Motorcycle Club, I w ou ld like to extend our apologies to the racers (es pecia lly those who s how ed up to race) and spectators for the cancellation of our hare scrambles at Lembo Lake Park in Modena, New York on Novemb er 7. During ,the week of the race, we were informed that the Town Zoning Board h ad determined that the property wa sn 't zoned properly and that the event had to be cancelled or face serious legal consequences. We then proceeded to send out over 200 letters of cancellation, telephoned those who had called and left phone numbers, and placed a message o f ca ncella tio n on o ur racing h otline. We a lso h ad cl u b memb ers a t Lembo Lake o n November 7 to greet th o s e w ho didn ' t ge t the m es s a g e . However, I'm s u re th ai we probably mi ssed so me people. Vet r a ce , m y father, Bob Well s , was involved in a crash during practice. He was taken to the trauma center at Riverside (Cal ifo rnia ) General Hospital w here he was diagnosed with severe trauma to the brain. He was in a coma for five days. On Thursday, November II, he responded for the first tim e. He is n ow in reco v e ry and i t will be quite aw h ile before he is back to his old self. I ju st want to th a n k Linda of GFI Racing for her help in making sure his bike and truck were ta ken care of at the tr ac k, and also the emergency staff on hand at all GFI events. Thanks to every one else I'm forgetting, and God bless. Je ff Wells Canyon Lake, CA Proud privateers When we began the 1993 racing season, th e Undo team set an ultimate goal of w inning the AMA Grand National Championship. Though we now h old the National title, we only achieved thi s feat w ith the combined help of a number of o ther privateers. We would like to recognize these riders who d irectly contributed to our 1993 success. At the Springfteld race in May, where Mike Hale and Rod n ey Farris finished second an d third behind Ricky Graham, the privateers had their first good showin g of 1993. Ricky moved into the point lead at Lima w hen Farris finished second and Ch ri s Ca rr was th i r d . Parkersburg p ro ve d to be a p rivateer's tra ck with Kevin Atherton winning the June race and with Ricky coming in second . In Dallas, in A ug ust , w hen Ath erton finished third behind Will Davis and Ric ky, th e Undo tcam took ye t another step towards achieving their u ltimat e go al. Steve Morehead 's continuous good s howing wi th podium finishes in Lake O d essa and Oklahoma City helped widen the points s p rea d as the season , progressed. Morehead, in a last-d itch e ffort on the b ack s tr a ig h ta w a y at Springfteld in the fall, proved to be the spoiler. The title w as clinched by his efforts. (Morehead reminds me of that Eveready Battery commercial where that rabbit just keeps going and going...The next time Morehead gets on the bo x, we want a teardown. We must see that Eveready Battery.) We at Team Undo are proud to be part of the privateer mission. We know our team is only as good as all 01 the other privateers who helped make this effort a success. Of course we all know that Ted Boody, King of the Privateers, looked dow n and sm ile d that d a y at Springfield ...Privateers on a mission. Mission accomplished. Jim Landes Team Undo Pro tection In th e last iss ue of Cycle News an item in th e "In the Wind" (Iss ue #44, November 10) referring to TPro Body Armor was in a ccu ra te and deserves clarifica tion. We apologize for any inconvenience that might ha ve b een e xperienced by you r readers who relied upon the accuracy of the article. Ke n Wright President, Sports Protection USA O rangeval e, CA What if? In reference to the article "Bug Man" by Joe Scalzo (Issue #44, November 10), Dick Mann and the writer should thank the AMA and the Competition Congress for letting Mann win the championship. Tha nks to th e scoring system used in 1963, Mann won the championship by the s c o r e of 114 to 113 for George Roeder. If the present-day scoring sy s te m was used, George Roeder would have won by a score of 119 to 97 for Mann. Roeder didn't r ide for the factory - he rode for Ralph Bemdt. He was ju st as much a privateer as Dick Mann. I had a lot of respect for Mann, but to win the Ascot 5O-Iap TT after be ing hurt that bad - I wonder what kind of magic potion they gave him to ride that well. In addition, if you foreign bike lovers don 't like the AMA rules, why don't you take y o u r toys and play in your own backyard? Jim Gravenhorsl Monroeville, OH And iffrogs hadwings...Editor.
