All righ ts reserved, Now that I'm fin a lly d rying o u t from Holland, I'd like to send my congratualtions to the w hole U.S. team of riders a nd support personnel for their efforts a nd accomplishments at this year's ISDE. The riders endured a lot with the tough weather conditions and te rra in, b u t the supprt was tough, too. The ch eck crews had to g et to the checkpoints without d irections and they had often cha nged loca tions before th e riders arrived - what a year! First off, a s p ec ia l thanks to th e following companies tha t supplied prod.. u cts and/or money to th e team: Arai Helmets for dona ting a team helmet to every rid er; Fredette Racing Products for handsavers; Bel Ray for all the lubricants; Me tzler Tires; FMF, who se n t silencers, people an d a truck with awnings for the Pa rc Ferine; Acerbis, USA; Link Racing. Inc. for drin k bottles; and Scott and Smith Gogg les . I'm grateful to Franco Acerbis, w ho h ad h is em ployees help a couple riders get their bikes quiet enough to make it through tech late Friday night so they could impound. Now thanks to the many people w ho used their vaca tion tim e to help ou r riders: Beaze Val encia who organized th e Pare Ferrn e c r e w; Bo b a n d Eileen Krause.Doug G ro ff, and DanOsborn e, who han dl e d all th e gas a nd tire requiremen ts; Ted a n d Evelyn Noviki, Bruce Wakely, Ted Swartz, Don an d Iris Rh odes, C h ris and Dia ne Hardy, and Bill and Bev Peiser w ho ha ndled th e key checkp o in ts a nd p rocured the pit su pplies; and the team d oct or, Dr. Rick Hill. Then there's th e past riders w ho ca me as managers a n d h elpers : C h a rles Halcomb, Dre w Smith, and Dwight and Debbie Ru d d e r. And thank y o u to all th e unn amed fami ly and friend s that jumped in to help . Thanks a lso to Hu gh a n d C onni e Fleming, Ro g e r Anse l, a n d De bbie Sheldon fro m th e AMA for a ll o f th eir help. Now prepare for Tu lsa - n ext year it will be ou r tum! Gunny Claypoo le Beaverton, OR Speedway help Sam Ermo le n k o makes s o m e good poi n ts in the Oc tober 27th iss u e . Speedway ra cing d oe s la ck newcomers, and junior programs could be one way of ad d res sin g the problem. But I doubt tha t ju nior programs, alone, are enough. One p roblem with speedway is the lack of a national fo u n d atio n on which to build . An y racing series of consequence o wes its existen ce and success to a thriving. grass-roots racing community. Local ·racers competing o n local tracks, supp orted by loca l fans. This is w here newcomers a re traditio nally welcomed and trai ne d. Unfortuntely, for the would..be speedw ay racer or fa n living outside of so u thern California, few opportunities exist. If sanctionin g bod ies a re u nwilling or unable to build a strong na tion al base, s pee d way will remain merely a reg iona l curiosity, if it exists a t all . Surely the re a re enough ra ce tracks, racers, and fans in this co u n try to sup.. port th is classically American, sideways s tyle of racing. All that's missing is an organization with a national name and presence to take the lead. Good job, Pomona I would like to say, "Good job, " to pro moter Ch ris Agajania n for the October 9 Pomona Half Mile . I flew in from New Jersey to see the races, and to visit our son and daughter in-law . Thanks to Orange County Harley-Davidson for selling us excellent tickets. My son and wife had never seen a dirt track .before, and I h ad never seen a race run so well. On time and no delays! I just received my Cycle News th a t had the '94 series da tes, and there 's no Syracuse Twin M iles . What ha p pen ed ? Tex and Ma rie Bailey Bloomingd ale, NJ Event promoter Mike Kidd reports that he has lost moneyfor the past two years that he has promoted the double-header, and saw no potential for growth in the futur e. "1 expected to lose money the fi rst year, but 1 had hoped to at least break even the second year and I didn't, " said Kidd. 'There's a lot of factors that I won't elaborate on, but probably the biggest is the lack of dirt track in the area." Tex, we, too, will miss the Syracuse Twin Miles; two great races in two days is hard to beat . . . Editor. Wanting trials Thanks for all th e gre a t trials cov erage recen tly . Grea t pictures, in te res ti ng quotes a nd h e lp fu l deta ils rriake it the best trials coverage in the U.S. Dave Polsan West Palm Beach, FL We want it all Congratulation s an d a big thank you to Da ve De s p a in, Larry Maiers and Bill W e rne r fo r bri ngi n g AMA Grand N a ti o n a l Championsh ip d irt track to television. Unfortunately for the v iew ers, however, w e h a ve b een short ch a nged. Of the n ine, on e-ho ur lon g sh ow s telecast thus far, s ix h ave been s h o r te n e d in leng th by ESPN, anywhere from five to 20 m inutes - the worst being the Sacramento Mil e which was reduced to an embarrasing 3O-m in u te sh ow. I understand that the live football telecasts that precede the races have a tendency to run late and that can't be helped, but why not cut into the following programs equally? Instead of cutting into half of the rac e coverage, why not spli t the over-run from the football games up into the next three o r four programs? Despain and his crew have brought to us p rofess io na lly- d o n e coverage, bu t unfortuna tely the telecasts are rarely seen as they were meant to be - in their entirety.
