AMA Dirt Shirts Fall Oassie MX Series: Final Round By Kyle Mye rs GAINESVILLE, FL, ocr. 31 here were no tricks, but plenty of treats for Kevin Windham and Todd DeHoop this Halloween Sunday at Gatorback Cycle Park, Kawasaki Team Green's Windham may have won the battle, but Honda of Troy's DeHoop clinched both the 125 and the 250cc/ Open class titles at the final round of the inaugural Fall Classic Series, the race also serving as the final stop on WorldSports' 11th Annual Gold Cup Series. DeHoop posted a 2-3 for third overall in the 250cc class and 2-2 for a secondplace finish in the 125cc division, to top Barry Carsten in the final point standings in both categories. A newly turned Pro-Am rider, Wind ham won three out of four motos to take top honors of the day in both classes. Rain the day before turned the track in to a mud pit, but before practice started Mark Barnett and the WorldSpo rts crew transformed the mud into a pretty decent race track. When the first 125cc Pro moto lined up, Honda of Troy / AXO /Renthal/ Sco tt /Pro Circu it /Bridgestone-backed DeHoop knew wha t he had to do. Coming in to the race, he had a slim twopoint advantage on Carsten, so his main priority was to finish ahead of his Suzuki-mou nted rival. Wh en the ga te drop ped , John Fesler shot into the early lead with Windham, Paul Curry , Jim Ches ter and Andre Pe n e in tow . DeH oop fell in the first co rner and remounted dead last. Windham qu ickly dis placed Fesler and pulled away from th e rest of the field . Pene th en fell to start the secon d lap, as Steve Childress and Carsten moved into fifth and sixth, respectivel y. DeHoop had set a rapid pace and was in seven th . Fesler held second for four laps, un til a bobble cost him a few posi tions. Meanwhile, Windham wa s putting as much distance as possible between himself and Curry, in second pla ce. At the halfway point of the 25-minute-plustwo-lap moto, DeHoop motored by Childress, and a lap later zapped Carsten to move into fourth position. Curry, Chester and De Hoop, meanwhile, locked onto each other's fenders and fought for second. Chester was the first of the three to make a move, as he out-jumped Curry. Curry then got passed by De Hoop and Carsten. DeHoop made his move for second on the tabletop ju m p, but by the time DeHoop passed Chester, Windham already had a 23-second advantage. Carsten worked on Chester and, with two laps to go, overtook him in a tum. Windham held on for the 3O-second win over DeHoop, Carsten, Chester and Curry. As the riders took to the line for the second moto, DeHoop and Carsten were tied in points, so the one who finished higher in the moto would win the title. DeHoop jumped out to the point position, as Chad Lough, Kenn y Yoho, Jim Neese and Windham ga ve ch ase. Carsten rounded the first turn in seventh. Neese and Windham knocked Yoho back to fifth, as Del-loop, Lough, Neese and Windham freight-trained around the track. Windham slipped by Neese, as Carsten advanced to fifth by passing Yoho. Windham flew by Lough, w hile pressuring DeHoop for the number-one spot. As they battled for the lead by the tower, Windham drew up beside DeHoop and made a pass going into the "gator pit." Lough then took a soil sample, allowing both Carsten and Damien Plotts by. Windham opened up a four-second lead that he would hold to the end, finishing ahead of Del-loop, Neese, Carsten and Plotts . Neese, Vince DeVan e, Gene Naumec and Chris Ridgeway followed . Windham mo ved into fifth po sition at the end of lap o ne, while DeHoop and N eese ba ttled fo r th e point po sition. Windham w as on the gas and dove underneath Naumec in a turn, then jumped by DeVane to take over third. DeHoop and Neese had a fi ve -s eco n d lead on Windham, b u t Windham was closing fast. Within two laps, the youn g Kawasaki ride r was on the ta il end of the lea di ng group. Windham shot by Neese in the back section of the course and a lap lat er took the lead from DeHoop. Windham ad ded six seconds to his lead to take the first-mote victory. Del-loop held off a late charge by Neese for second, and DeVane and Carsten rounded out the top five. Neese rocketed to the front of the second moto, a s Ridgeway, Del-loop, Windham and Dag Boyesen dodged his roost. Ridgeway slipped back to fourth , as DeHoop and Windham je tted by. Neese was on the move and motored away from the battle for the second sp o t. Boyesen and DeVane moved Ridgeway back two more places to fill the fourth and fifth spots. DeHoop held Windham at ba y for fi ve laps, until Windham squeezed by in a tum. Windham, now in second, found that Neese had a 10-se co nd lead . Team Gr een/ AXO /Ren th al /Max ima /Hammerhe ad /Dunlop /Pro Circuit-sponsored Win dham held his posi tion, knowing his second place was good enough for the overall win.
