think the black flag could possibly be for him. But it was, the officials spotting the smoking Suzuki which was brought in just after four bikes went down on oil. It wa sn 't d etermined if the Fastline/MCM Suzuki bike caused the spills, especially since Barnes didn't fall on his own oil, but the crashing stop ped after the red flag and in the final two-plus hours there was no who lesale crashing in tum five. There were a few ea rly casu a lties. Christi an Ga rd ner crashed th e Tw o Bro thers Racin g Too Ho nda in the lef t ha nd d ogleg on the firs t lap, fracturing his left arm. Team America' s Fritz Kling slowed drama tic a ll y on the fif th lap after having a p iece of debris hi t him in the hand. He p itted and handed off to Woody Dea th erage who woul d finish the ra ce . The d eb ri s sliced through Kling' s glove a n d to the bone. Th e injury required stitches and Kling was told that he could n' t ge t the stitches wet, so his day was over . On the re -s ta r t, Barnes aga in took co n trol with Dutchma n Racing's Ra y Yoder giving chase and Tommy Lynch thi rd on th e Two Brothers Racing H ond a CBR900. Yod er mad e an unscheduled pit sto p on the sixth lap of the re-start when he felt a vib ration in the rear tire. "Some bel ts broke inside of it," Yoder said. "It vibr a ted real bad . At th e red flag we were go ing to cha nge it. It got us some laps down." No t long after, Yoder had to come in to ha ve cu t slicks fitted to the Du tehman Racing Yamaha FZ RI000. Barnes also came in to change tires and give th e .Fas tline/ MCM Suz uki to Scott Zamp ach af ter riding thr ough the rain. "The rain started by the chicane, then came down the banking, and down the backstraigh t," Barnes sai d. "I was doing 2:03's in the rain. I'd ha ve stayed out there. 1wanted them to tell me." At the on e-hour mark , H.N.5. Racin g w as in the lead, Tray Batey at the controls of th e team' s Yamaha FZR-lOOO, with Zampach secon d. The H.N.5. team waited until the halfway mark to bring Batey in and send Thomas Wilson out, th e team s till in the lead despite racing through the rain on slicks. "I was keeping an eye on the clouds," Batey said. "Out of the chicane it was really wet, but the water was running off the banking good. I had to hold my speed down. The infield was real slippery. I slowed to 2:20's and my best lap times were 1:59's . We were using hard compound slicks and we had a real hard time driving out of comers when leaned over." He would hand the bik e back to Lynch just after the tw o-hour mark as th e Two Brothers ' crew fit ted a n ew hand-cut re ar slick. The tir es ha d an overabundance of mold rel ea s e r on them and Ienatsch found them to be a handful at first. "The first two laps I didn't lean ove r any farther than a tricycle," Ien a tsch said . "They sca red me. You ge t a li ttle sprin kle and it starts messing w ith yo u r brain. It was driftin g a little, but nothing major." Deather age had the Tea m Am e rica bike up to fourth as team captain Frank Sl a u g hter su ited up and w a i te d fo r Deatherage to g ive an indica tion th at he 'd ha d enough. Barnes came in aga in with half an hour to go , but said he was having so much fun that he wanted to finis h the race, which he did, at the front. "We fina lly got the bike sorted out at th e en d of the se a son, " Barnes s aid . "The pressure was off an d it see med to be an eas ier race." "Wi th 45 minu tes left we got the official word that we were leading," Zamp ach sa id . "We had a cu t slick on th e rear and a DOT on the front . Going 180 mph we w ere a little worried tha t the DOT wouldn't take that speed. It would cha tter and vibrate on the banking. It was concerning me quite a b it. It was really a situ a tion th a t I was thinking back to Charlotte and Mike Harth crashing . It was vib rating and shaking out of my ha nd s and I was praying to God nothing would happen." "We planned on pitting three tim es. When I went out it was raining and we p ut on rain tires. It wa s my turn again and I was all excited to go out and ride what was most likely my last ride for Fastline and I saw Mike come in ready to go," Zampach said. Bate y a nd Wilson had a handlin g p roblem on the ir Yam aha FZRl000, but it d id n' t stop them from fini shing second. "We had a hea d shake on the bike," Batey said. " It both ered Tom the first s tint. It was jus t kind of a nuisance. The bik e was a handful when it started raining. Our team manager told me if it really got bad to come in and they would do some th in g about it. When the 600 SuperSport bi kes began passing me in the infield, I thought it w as getting pretty bad .': Two Brothers Racing was a comfortab le th ird, Lynch brin ging "Th e Countermeasure" in to the winner's circle. "I think it go t bo ring out there when it began to ra in," Lynch said. "That's w he n yo u've go t to be a bit tentative and that's not racing. I' m glad we were ab le to run most of the race in the d ry. It w as d efinit e ly exci tin g, that's for su re. We came here thinking about next year's p rogra m, testin g d ifferent tires and s us p ensio n comb inatio n s . We didn' t ha ve exactly the right combination so we go t beaten today. What we learned toda y w ill help us next season." Dutchman Racing's Mike Harth and Ray Yoder were cre dited with fourth, th ou gh team captain Dave Schlosser thought they'd finished hig her. "They 're telling us we're three laps d own. That ' s imp ossible," Schlosser sa id. "We were 10 seconds a lap faster than anybody in the rain." A scoring recount was done following the race and the results stood. Woody Deatherage bro ug ht the Team America bike home fifth having ridden about 2 1/2 hours.
