and Antunez. Lewis, who had gated
. well, ran into Hughes around the first
comer and would start his charge back
in 18th place. As Lawrence enjoyed a
small lead over Brooks, Emig was quick
to get by Parsons and set his sights on
Brooks. Brooks would also fall victim to
the har d-charging Yamaha rider. As the
two riders approached the triple, they
flew side by side, and Emig powered his
way pas t Brooks through the following
comer.
Lawrence was enjoying a comfortable lea d and would never be challenged. Lawrence crossed the finish line
victoriou s aboard his Suzuki RM250.
Ernig, Brooks, Hughes and Lewis
rounde d out the top five . Both Lewis
and Vailla nco u rt, who started in the
back of the pack, had picked off riders
at a fast pace, moving themselves into
the top 10. Vaillancourt would finish
ninth.
Seventee n-year-old Terry Parsons
rode to an impressive seventh.

Pro purse.
Among some of the top riders were
Team Yamaha's Jeff Emig - former AMA
125cc National MX Champion, Team

. Missing from the lin eup wa s loca l
fa vorite Pedro Gonza les, who wa s
forced to sit and watch from the stands
with a broken ankle he sustained one
week prior to the event.
"It's a very big d isappointment for
me not being able to race for my hometown fans:' Gonzales said.
Because of the large rider turnout, a
supercross format was used to eliminate
the field down to a 2D-rider main event.
Two heats and a last chance qualifier
were used. Brooks led Lech ien and
Emig across the line in heat one, and
Lawrence topped Antunez and Lewis in
heat two . Former Minicycle champion
John Kitch ran away with the last
chance qualifier.
Lawrence had the qu ickest reaction
time out of the gate as he holeshot the
main event. Right on his rea r fender
were Brooks, Parsons, Emig, Hu ghes
Huffman and local Pro Ray Hen sley
battled for the holeshot at the start of the
first 125cc Pro moto. Huffman squeeked
out the lead by hammering a set of rockers after the first tum, but Hensley and
Larry Linkogle were almost ' immediateIy surround ing him.
" I only rode four laps of practice, so I
wasn't too sure of the track:' Huffman
said.
After three laps Huffman seemed to
find his rhy thm and pick up the tempo
while the local king of Perris, Donald
Up ton, moved into the top five. At the
midpoint of the race, Huffman was setting the fastest lap times while enjoying
a healthy twenty-second lead.
Huffman motored away for the eventual win while Upton dispatched both
Hensley and Linkogle for second . In the
late stages of the moto, Greg Schnell and
Craig Decker, who both started the
moto last, picked up the third and fifth
spots, respec tively. Linkogle took fourth
place.
The sec on d moto saw Huffman
agai n in co n tro l, with Upton close
beh ind in second. Upton gave chase
during the early laps but could not keep
his NCY I BilI ' s Pipes/V.P./Shock
Therapy-backed Yamaha on pace with
Huffman's Cycle Engineering-prepared
Suzuki.
Hu ffm an once again raced alone
throughou t the greater part of the moto
for the overall win . Upton raced uncontested in second while Decker worked
up from a midpack start to third in
front of Schnell, Steve Andrich and
Linkogle.
Upton didn't leave empty handed as
he came back to post a two-moto sweep
of the 250cc Pro class. Upton's only real
challenge came from Tony Amaradio
who rode into the runner-up position.
Craig Canoy finished a respectable third
followed by Erick Hilton, and Yamaha
test rider Mark Easley.
