v 0ICES L etterstothe editor One class act... I've just returned from two days of racing a t the Birch Creek round of the AMA Fall Cla ssic Series and I was extremely impressed with the new facility and how all a spects o f the racing were handled. I've attended a ma teu r and profession al e ve n ts for 20-plu s ye ars, and felt that th e facility had a gre at atmosphere - very ca sual and relaxed with out the hassles that seem to occur at other ev ents. Thi s, combined with a mo stly natural track layout (no supercross stuff here) and perfect condi. tions, leaves me wondering if we can count on a repeat next yea r. If so, those who missed it this year wi ll get a chance to see one of the best-promoted events on the East Coa st. M.D. Smith Greensboro, NC According to the AMA , they are pleased with Fall Classic Series and plan on continuing it for '94. Th ere is eve n talk about expanding the series (as a replacement fo r th e now -d efun ct SOOcc National MX Seriesl). A schedule has not yet been fin alized...Editor Two class acts On Oc tober 9 and 10, the Ridgerunners M.e. put on a ter rific dua l-sport ride from Angel s Ca m p , Cal ifornia, to Carso n City, N e v a da . Roll-chart mileages were precise and the trail lay ou t was great. The rid e took us through Tahoe and we were la te r treat ed to a superb stea k lunch w ith home-baked cak es. The areas covered and fine club work made it the best dual-sport ride I have been on. My applause to the club members for their hard work. Don Montgomery Oakland, CA A w ake up call Hey, Donnie Harrell (Voices - October 20), wake up and smell the coffee. It sure is u n-Arnerican to complain abo ut Harley-Davidson getting into superbike racing. There are many of u s out her e who h a ve been eagerly awaiting the addition of a new Harley road racer. Who can forget th e days of Gene Church and the Don T illey-tuned Luc ife r's Hamm er in BoTT . We have been waiting a long time for this and already peopl e like y o u are whining about things that will neve r happen. Why is it that so many people have to draw these Ame rican /Japanese lines all the time. Do w e n ot h ave a com mo n in terest here ? Motorcycles. In response to his claims of Harley a n d the AMA chang in g rules in dirt track raci n g, did h e happ en to no tice wh o w on th is year? And is it possible that the Japanese factories pulled ou t for o ther reasons? Lighten up, enjoy the sport, and cheer for your favorite motorcycle and rid er. P.S. Keep up the great work, congratula tions to Ke vin Schwantz a nd bes t wishes to Wayne Rainey and his fami ly. Phil Schlief SI. Q) ~ Q) ::> o Z Complain no mo re In response to all the complaining about Harley-Davidson, dirt track racing and the AMA: Racers know what it takes to win a championship. It takes a combination of suspension, chassis setu p, tire cut and pressure, a strong motor, lots of desire, and good old lu ck. The winning b ike is built with components from many a fterm arket manufa cturers; it's n ot jus t a Honda , H a rley, Rota x, Yamaha, Triumph, etc. It also takes the full talen t and su pport of tuners, sponsors, fam ily a n d friends. This is why Ricky Graham , Scott Parker, Chris Carr, Bubba Sh ob ert, Jay Springs te en, e tc ., have been su ccessful. It's not because of special ru les. I am a Pro/ Am racin g a 600 cc Honda. When I get beaten by a Rotax, I try ha rder. When m y setup is right, I've beaten them. That's racing. As for the 883 class - un til the grands ta nds are filled with fans ca lli ng for 6OOs, then promoters and the AMA ha ve to run classes that put the fa ns in th e stands - because racing cannot su rvive only for the riders. So stop complainin g, put on a smile and come to the races. We'll giv e you the best show in town.
