John W illiams sco red the 250cc Inte.med iat e win
in round one of the northern reg ion Tra ns-Cal
series held at Albany Supe rcross .
It was no cake walk for the talents o f
Williams to win the 250cc Intermediate class on
Sunday. Off to a light hning start was'Vy-Lam
Nguyen followed by Williams, Lance Furgess
and Ryan Leach. who was just returning from a
sho u lder separation. On lap one, Leach made his
move on fellow co mpe titors and won the first
mote go ing a way. Ng uye n was able to hold off
Willia ms to take seco nd .
In mot o two , Leach got a no ther slow s ta rt
bu t aga in im me dia tely challenged fo r firs t.
Leach mad e a n incredible pass on Williams on
la p o ne, a nd in t he sa me la p s wa llowed up
Ng uyen. But on lap two, Leach fell victim to
hard luck as his bike threw a chain. w hich left
him on the side lines. Mean while. Williams ga ve
chase to Nguyen and mo ved int o seco nd by lap
three, rem a ini ng there for the rest of th e moto.
Burgess also fell to ha rd luc k with a DQ for the
day. Will iams. with his 3·1 moto wins, cla imed
first with N gu yen a steady 2-2 for seco nd . Jaso n

close the distance over Brian Perriot and Team
U k ia h , but stayed s e co n ds ahead of To n y
Tugwell on the Arcl igh t Honda. A o ne- la p
penalty dropped Team Ukiah back into third in
class and fourth overall.

bro ugh t out the best in the Expe rt class as Mike
Kom er grabbed the ove ra ll win with a score of
60.
The top fou r riders were within 11 po ints of
each othe r as Komer defeated Ray Peters' score
of 68. The Ad va nced class was won by Emmett
Wat kins with a score of 91 po ints. Section eig ht
was -located in an area used in las t yea r's Tri als
des Na tions, only the Expe rt riders di d not ha ve
to climb as h igh up the h il l. But the sectio n
required all the ski ll they cou ld muster .
The In te rmed ia te class was won by Mark
Pettit over Roger Allis by a scor e of 53 10 61. The
Intermediate ride rs found the ir most challenging ride in section number five, which was also
located in an area used in last year's Trial s des
Nations. The section was a waterfall with bo th
up and down hills. The riders were able to,clea n
most of the Novice sec tions, but sections two
and three were where mos t of th e riders los t
poi nts . Both sections had mud. with section two
running over tree roots and section three on a
downhill.
The largest Rookie class of the year had 10
en tries. The cla ss was won by Gary Brogda le
with 16 po ints. Gary Barnes won the Twin Shock
ClclSS, and Steve Q uance won the Vintage Class.

Hawkins set a blister ing pace to win the first
roun d of SETRA's Hare Scramble Series, Th e
Cherokee Hare Scramble in Greensboro, Ca.
Doug Jones took the ea rly lead , holding off
Hawkins and company for nearly fou r laps . On
the fourth lap, Ho1wkinstook the lead and never
gave it up despite a late charge by Jones on the
seventh and fina l lap . Dale Cross took the win in
200 cc A class abo ard his o n e·o f-a- k ind
Kaw asaki KXI25. In Open A, John Fero took the
win in his first race since breaking his ann last
year.
Wi lliam Hughes took the Open C win by

mo to wins to claim the overall titles in the 125cc
Pro and 25. classes at the seco nd annual Long
Isla nd Moto Challenge at Bridgehampton
Motorsports Park.
McIlvaine started th e 125cc Pro moto wi th
Joh n Fra nco a lo ngside as they raced into th e
woods. Franco jumped ou t of the back sec tion
with th e le a d . Fran co mai n tained his lead
throughout lap one with Mcllvaine, Jalil Lynch
and Vincent Allegretta in tow. By the m id po int
of the moto, the leaders raced side by side un til
Mcilvaine we nt ins ide of Franco a nd took over
the lead , as Mcilvaine was first down the parachute jump . Mcilvaine wen t on to take the w in.
Franco m<1 inta ined his seco nd p lace w hile Lync h
scored th ird p lace. Vincen t Allegre tta nosed out
McIlvaine for the lead at the start of moto two.

trio and passed Allegrelta to rou nd out the top

back stra ight and took advantage of two res tar ts

p oin t. But Brown powered by as they ex ite d
turn two with tw o laps re mai ni ng . Sha ne
Goodnight held on lor thin:! with Monell taking
fourth.
In nat trac k action, Jack Bart a rm cr ui ~ to
both hea ts and th e feat ure w in in the Hea vy
div ision . In the Ligh t divisio n, Do n Herron,
Kenny Arnold and Jim Beck ba ttled side by side ,
often three wide in bo th heats a nd th eir feature
even t. Beck led the first three trip s across the
stripe, then it was Herron for a lap . Beck went
back up front for a co u p le mo re la ps, t hen
Arnold took over with one lap to go . As they
came to the checkered flag, Herron came aro und
the outside to take the win, drop ping Arnold 10
seco nd an d Beck to third. Dave Arno ld chased
the trio across for fourth.
In Knob by action, Bobby Peters motor ed to
the wi n with Brian Bell inge r close behind .
Bellinger had more power tha n his knobby lire
could hook to the track while Peters four-stroke
Honda clearly had less power, bu t the trac tion
made the d ifference.
Jaso n Berardinelli was able to hold off han:!charging Charl ie ltalia for one lap befo re Italia
