Jeremy McGrath (2) battled Craig Decker (141) for the Pro win at Perris MX. 32 Vintage 600cc lead and took off. Behind him, BSA B50-mounted Craig Breckon moved Weinert back to third and started off after Blackstock. But Blackstock slowed suddenly, his engine pinging, and Breckon inherited the lead. The Modem Vintage Open class was divided into two groups. In the first, it was BSA-mounted Wad who got the best of the field. The second race was a showcase for Arnie Mahnke and his fast '68 Norton, with Aldana second. In the 'pre-'68 Classic Vintage 500cc OHV /750cc Sidevalve heat, Keen got past Moroney on a Team Obsolete Matchless G50 and opened a fairly comfortable lead. Moroney made a run at the BSA rider late in the race but came up short. The Dinosaur Vintage final looked a lot like the heat race as Breckon built himself a sizeable lead over Jovanovic and Moro ney. By contrast, Modem 250cc class had an edge-of- the-seat race. Warf a nd Alda na were both off quickly, followed by Ossa-moun ted Rick Soles a nd Blackstock, on a Yamaha. While Warf ran low, Aldana used the high line in his attempt to overtake the leader. Warf got a little sideways in the last tum , allowing Alda na to get a better drive in the run to the checkered flag. They made the cool-down lap, unsure which had won, but when they arrived back at the start-finish line, it was Aldana who was handed the flag for a victory lap . Breckon rocketed into the lead of the Modem 600cc final on his BSA thumper, g iving it up on lap three to the hardcharging Blackstock. Blackstock's lead, howev er, was s ho r t-li ved . A nasty tank slapper on the back stretch did little to help his just-healed shoulder, and he dropped out Though he opened a nice margin on the pack , Breckon didn't get much of a chance to savor his position either. Weinert caught the Michigan rider and took over the lead on the white-flag lap . Having twice the engine displacement of Weinert's Honda wasn't enough, and Breckon had to settle for second. It didn't take Mahnke long to get his No rton ou t front in the Modern Open final, b ut in tight formation were Moroney on the ex-Dick Mann Matchless, BSA-mounted Warf and Aldana on a '70 Triumph twin. Moroney dropped back to fourth at the halfway point, and things began to get interesting . As Aldana made his move to the outside to pass in the rough, slick first tum, Warf made the job easier by crashing ou t of contention. Aldana then set his sights on Mahnke, pulling within striking distance on the final lap. Had Mahnke started his victory wheelie a little sooner, Aldana might have picked up his second win . Moroney rode three different classes on the Matchless and finally got his win in Classic 500/750cc. BSA-powered Keen stayed close throughout the race, but Moroney stayed in command. The Classic 250cc win went easily to Todd McDonald on his '62 Parilla. 0 Resu lts DI NO VINT: 1. Craig Brec kon (M a t); 2. = = L~o Jovanovic (H-D); 3. Pal Moroney (lnd). V1NT 2SO: 1.
