Before the night was over, Kin g joined a very elite gro up as he handily won the 25-lap pe r. Th ere were three rounds of scratch racin g from which the top 12 riders transferred to the Classic. Bobby Sch wartz was the top point finishe r, having a perfect score after three wins. King, Charlie Ven ega s and Chris Manchest er were tied for second with Brent Wern er an alone in third and Mike Faria, john Aden and Andy Northrup fourth in the stand ings . jim Estes wa s so lo in fifth with a run-off betw een Shawn McConnell, Steve Lucero, Brad Oxley and Don Od om d etermin in g th e fin al three transfers . Said Kevin Tarwater after tw o co me- fro m -be hi nd rid es to dom inate the 12Scc Beginner cla ss at California Racing Club's Frida y night mot ocross at Los Angeles County Raceway. Wes Dell jumped out to an earl y firs t-moto lea d w it h Wes Fa r ia, Mike Johnson a nd Ta rw a ter wa tch ing his every mov e. Faria was passed by Johnso n on the first lap then we n t down. Ta rwater closed to johnson's rear wheel looking for passing room . Dell had some tro uble and e nded up ru nning off th e tra ck. joh nson bobbled in a comer a llowing Tarwater to eas ily pass both riders for the lead . Tarwater immediately started to pull away for what would be an uncontcsted mote win. "'For a while I couldn ' t ge t any lines, the two guys in front of me were a ll ove r the track. the re was no p lace for me to go." sa id Tarwater. Johnson continued on to finis h second even off the track excursion of his own that after let Dell ge t close in theFina l stages of the mc to. "I d idn ' t d o too badly, made a couple of mistakes then hit a jump once real hard and almost went down." said Johnson. Dell and johnson were side-by-side leadi ng th e pack through th e first turn in moto tw o. johnson held the throttle on a little lon ger to grab the lead . "We were touching actu ally. We were bumping each other over the first coup le of jum ps- it was scary." sa id johnsoW'fter the mot o. Tarw ate r gated in the third spo t and moved around Dell within a lap to pr essure johnson for th e lea d. j oh n so n handed Tarwater th e lead when his front end washed out in a tum, causing him to cras h. Johnson remounted in seco nd place only to go down again half a lap later and drop to th ird b ehind Dell. A de te r mi ne d johnson set out after Dell. "'1 jus t lost concentra tion, I was ho ld ing on too tight Once Wes Dell went aroun d me I jus t made a bee-line for him, there was nothing lhat was going to stop me from gelli ng by him, "I had to ge t that seco nd ." said johnson. And he did a lap later, pegging the throttle off a jump and d ispla cing Dell back to third.
