abou t 10 minutes after the start and continued
raining for the remainde r of the two hour event.
Caplinger regained the lead and held off a challenge by KTM-m ounted Leig h Letelli er late in
the race. Cap linge r, who was the only rider to go
out on the sixth lap before the two-h our cut off,
had prob lems with ris ing water and drowned
his eng ine more than onc e on that last lap . His
determination paid off as he cam e around to collect the overa ll tro phy .
Letellier was ah ead of Cap linge r go ing into

Brown, Hill score
at Top Gun Motocross
IRONSfATION,NC SEPT.26
Mike Brown made th e tr ip from Ten nesee to
take the Pro cla ss wins wh ile Spe nce r Hill
topped the 60cc class at the th ird round of the
Carolina Ul tra Series at Top Gu n MX. Brown
smo ked the competi tion as he ta llied a fourmot a swee p in the 125 an d 250cc A classes.
Brown made his first trip to Top Gun MX
pay off big by taking fuJI a dva ntage o f the
Honda Con tingen cy program and wen t hom e
with an extra $600 for his efforts. This, coupled
w ith his cash for the Pro wins, brought Brown 's
collec tion to about $1000. The fence line wa s
already starting to fill up with a crowd that wa s
eager to see on e of th ose classic Brown-Neese
confro ntations, but it wa s not to be. Neese seems
to have a big black cloud that follows him every
tim e he comes to Top Gu n, and tod ay was no
differen t. After hol eshotting mota one of th e
250c c A cla ss, things were look in g go od for
Neese as he led Brown ar ound for th e first three
laps . At one po int the pr essure was even off of
Neese d ue to Brown 's untim ely get-off in ' the
stu tter wh oop s, but Brown rem ounted to jump
rig ht back on Neese's case. Neese 's ba d lu ck
cam e when he crashed out in moto one and only
captu red third while Brow n ran o ff a nd hid
from the rest of the pack.
Brow n a lso sc ore d th e seco nd-mo te win.
Yam aha-mounted Jim Ch es ter p ut in st ro ng
rides in both m otos to take seco n d be hi nd
Brown. Mike Andrews wa s able to chase down
Kevin Walker's Yam aha in the secon d 2S0cc
moto and put Walker back to fou rth on the da y
ah ead of Rand y Richard son.
Hill took the holeshota t the start of the first
60cc mota to lead the first lap an d a ha lf before
he gave in to the relen tless a ttac k of Nich olas
Warn er and allowed Warn er to slip past for first.
The two stayed neck and neck for most of the
mota while Derrick Bell had his hands fu ll fighting off Michael Willis and Willy Baker. Warne r
went on to pull a comforta ble lead befo re th e
finish ahead of the battle that Hill and Bell had
sta rted for second . Hill took the run ner-up spo t
in mot o one and set him self up for the overa ll,
provided he turned in a good ride in mo ta two.
The top trio went at it just as har d in moto
tw o with Bell jump ing out fron t to lead the ear ly
stages of the mota. Hill work ed past Bell on lap
three an d wa s a bl e to u se Bell as a cus hion
between himSelf and a gaining Warner. Warn er
did manag e to pass Bell an d went to work on
Hill, but Hill held his ground and did wha t he
had to do for the win. Hill 's 2-1 score gave him
the top spot while Warner took seco nd ove rall
with fini shes of 1-3. Bell round ed out the top
three over Brandon Langdon and fifth-place finisher Baker.
