Schellinger and Orlando were ridi ng at close quarters as Hoppe rstad was dropping off the pace while tryin g to keep tou ch with the leader. Schellinger was gett ing a bette r drive off o f tu rn seven an d ca rry ing his spee d d ow n the h ill through eight and n ine, and he passed Ho p p e rs ta d , taking Orlando and Schellinger with him. Hough tough at Steamboat RR By Tim Wolf STEAMBOATSPRINGS, co.SErf. 19 Yama ha-m ounted Donnie Hou gh was the ma n to beat as he collected the win in the Race of the Rockies GTO class at the 13th annua l Steamboat Motor cycle Week road races held in the stree ts of Steamboat Springs. Becau se of the h igh alti tude along w it h a new track surface the riders and mechanics had their hands full tryin g to get the bikes dialed in. The wea ther mad e thin gs worse wit h dri zzle in the morning tha t turned into pellet -sized ha il. Ten minutes later the sun would come ou t and the track woul d start to d ry out on the racing line. Thi s had the ride rs scra mbling to d ecid e what tires to run. The s ta rt grid fo r th e Race of the Rockies GTO class had Donnie Hou gh on the pole with Ma rk Schellinger a n d OW0 1-mou nt ed Ku rt Dimick filling o u t the fro nt row. ln row two Jo hn Hoppers tad , Rick O rla nd o a n d Den n ie Bu rke were ready to put a sto p to th e flee t Houg h. With the exception of Orlan do 's CBR900 RR, the front two lines were all Yama ha OW mou nted ride rs . Gri dded on row se ve n was Utah ride r Robert Wr ight with Utah state cha mp Shane Turp in in row eight. Hou gh had bee n undefea ted in the Race of th e Rockies GTO class for the year a nd w as d etermin ed to keep his streak of co nse cutive wins inta ct. At the d rop of the flag, Houg h was to the ha irpin tum in the lead with Hoppers tad and Dimick going to battl e for the second spot. Orlando, Schellinger and Bu rke we re all ove r each other while tryin g to keep sight of Hough and Hop p e rs ta d . On th e lo ng u p hill to the en trance of tum seven, Schellinger had the bet- LEWISTON, ME, SErf. 5-6 John Dowd retu rned to the Bull Run MX track in Lew iston, ME, over Labor Day weekend to win fo ur consecu tive Exp ert cla sses in the New Eng land Spo rts Committee Fall Championship series . Also on hand for this two-day event were Spring Cha mpio ns hip se ries poin ts leade r, Pat Barton, and last yea r's NESC Ch am p ion Tony Lorusso . In Sunday's action , Dowd was slow at the ga tes all .d ay, and un abl e to tak e a ho leshot. This, however, did not pr event him from quickly working his way throug h the pack to hunt the lead ers down, often w ithin the first lap . Once ou t fron t, the race was his. Dowd pu sh ed early in the race for a large lead . In the second half he backed off sligh tly, taking the checke red flag. In the second 125cc mota, af ter exiting the first turn in seventh. Dowd was able to move up four po sitions within the first lap and knock on third p lace rid er Wa lly Silva's back door. In w ha t amou n ted to a rerun of the fir s t mo ta , Dowd m us cle d h is way past Silva m idway through the second lap and bega n to hun t down Ozielac 's Ho nd a. Dzielac held the lead in the ea rlie r mo ta for onl y two laps befor e Dowd turn ed up the hea t a nd ran him down. After o u t-ju mpi ng Dzi elac a t th e table top, Dowd im med ia tely throttled out front by at least 10 bi ke lengths. DzieJac was un able to ree l Dow d back in to retake the lead and had to settle for another second . In th e 20 0cc Exp e rt cl as s Tony Lo rus s o grab bed the holesho t in the second moto. Dowd quickly moved into th ird, and by the end of the first lap, ha d repositioned him self on ly inches from Loru sso 's rea r tire. Befor e the end of the seco nd lap, Dowd cut to the ins ide coming off the tablet op an d squeezed Lorusso ou t of the lead . For the next lap Lorusso kep t up the pace, b ut he bega n falling off the lead by the third lap. Bill Dzielac, who had gollen good starts in the 12Scc class, was la te into the first tum, and had to start out near ly 12 riders down. With in the first few laps however, Ozielac had throttled h imself back in to the front of the p ack in the third po sition. Dzielac began to reel in Lorusso. Dzie lac ove rtoo k-Loru ss o on the wa y over the back hill and began to creep up Dowd. Dzielac took advantage of Dowd's quick spill to pa ss into the lead .
