and he d ecid ed to call it a d ay rather
than do anything expensive to the rare
m o tor. Busby went on to w in bo th
motes, followed by the Rickman BSA of
David Dewh urst in second .
When the old guys on old bikes took
to the track for +50 Expert, John Geer on
his '65 BSA441 and Bultaco pilot Danny
Davies went back and forth , with Geer
ma naging to hold onto the lead wh ere it
coun ted . After finis hi ng fourth in the
firs t rnoto, Jim McClin ton passed Geer
ea rly on a nd go t his '74 CCM rolling.
Again, Geer topped Davies. The ove rall
went to Geer by virtue of his 1-2 finishes
ove r Davies' 2-3 and McClinton 's 4-1.
As usual, the Sportsm a n 125 Exper t
riders provided an abundance of action.
Brock Suter and his Can -Am got the first
moto holesh ot and never relinquished
the lead . Beh ind him, though, a group of
four rid er s tu ssled ov er second, w hich
Randy Kirschbaum finally laid claim to.
In the second moto, Kirschbaum held
the lead throughou t the race, followed
cl o sely by d ef end ing AHRMA class
ch amp Greg Bast ek , on a Honda, and
his rival, Bultaco-rnounted Tim Wea ver.
Bas tek was no t a factor after falling and
breaking his clu tch lever at the start of
the ope ning moto.
It took so me se rious calc ula ting for
sco r e keepers to wo r k th is o ne o u t:
Kirschb a um won the overall with 2-1
finishes, followed by Suter (1-4), Weaver
(6-3) and Bastek (9-2).
Road race
Like past Steambo at road races, this
one was a mix of su n and ra in, warm
and cold. And like last year, the muchan ticipa ted ma tchup between the vi ntage mas ter rid ing injured and the relative newcomer ended when the you nger
rider lost the front end of h is bike in the
very same come r.
Th at was the 500cc Premier race, pitting Tea m Obs ol et e' s Da ve Rop er
aga inst Barber Dairy Product's Stephen
Mathews. Both were on Matchless GSOs,
thou gh the Barber machin e wa s a
British-built replica of the famed 500cc
single whi ch s uffe re d from teeth ing
problems all season long. Roper, however, was working under his own handicap. After cras hing the Team Obsolete
Benelli 350 four at the Isle of Man a few
weeks ear lier, the affable New Yorker
was st ill hobbling around on a cane.
Last year at Steamboat, Roper was hurting after fall in g hard in practice but
rode anyway, declaring there is no therapy like racing a motorcycle.
When the flag dropped for the 500
Premier, the rain had end ed and the
cou rse was mostly dry. Roper arrived
first in turn on e, with Mathews close
behind. As the pa ir emerged from the
op posi te side of Mt. Werner to complete
the first lap a t a hot p ace, it wa s
Ma thew s lea di ng. But it ended all too
quickly. The front end of Mathews'
Matchless tu cked under as he turned
into the slow first comer , send ing the
bike sliding into the hay bales. Mathews
was up quickl y to move the bike out of
harm's way, his race over. Same as last
year.
Roper went on to open a command.ing lead that belied hi s injuries.
Jonathan Terry put in a spirited ride to
second on his beautiful '66 Honda 450,
while Michael Green came back from a
ba d start to finish third on his West
Coast British Racing Ducati.
Rick Doughty and his '72 Yamaha
250 had a close Formula 250 race with
Bley on his Maico 175. Despite an all-out
effort by Bley on the last lap, Doughty
held on for the win. And in his final race
on the multi-purpose Gold Star,
Doughty almost managed to hold off
BMW-mounted Ralph Auer for the
Sportsman 500 win. In all , Doughty'S
Gold ie logged second -pl ace finishes in
road racing, tria ls and d irt track and a
win in MX.
