Carr assumed the lead on the back straigh t and inst antly opened up a small lead over Hale, who now had his hands full with Taylor and Gra ha m. Graham p roved to be the man on the move in the early stages of the race, as he first passed Taylo r, then Hal e as they raced in to turn one. Ha le s truc k back and repassed Graham on the third lap, but Gra ha m disp laced Hale for good a few tu rns later . When Graham took over second, he fo un d hi ms elf s om e 10 b ik e lengths behind Carr, bu t with in three laps he had closed to Carr's rear fender. " Bu t right whe n 1 got on his ass the bike started to sp u tter ." Graham immediately began to slow, and it was obvious tha t so me thi ng was wrong. For the first time all season, his Johnny Goa d -tu ned Honda was beginning to fail him. "It would cut out, then go, then cut ou t again," sa id Graham. "It was really pretty dangerous. If it had cu t ou t while 1 was slidi ng it could have highsided. 1 wa s going to pull off, but 1 decided tha t lowed it to the fans to a t leas t stay on the track." G raha m eve n tua lly fad ed to n in th , though he showed flashes of brilliance when his mo tor ran prop erly. After starting fifth, Parker had raced p ast Taylor and Hale and held down third when Graham began to struggle . "After racing with Taylor in our heat, 1 knew that if 1 didn't get a good start and pass him rea l quick he w ould be impossible to get by. Wh en Ricky broke 1 saw that Chris had a pretty good lead, but 1 jus t hammered it and reeled him in." "1 knew tha t tire wear was go ing to be a factor ," said Carr. "1 saw that Scott was runni ng me d own, but 1 was just settled into a sa fe pace." La p after lap, Parker chased afte r Carr, and finally took over the lead with a fro nt-straightaway pass on lap 14. "I figured tha t I'd let Scott lead for a while," said Carr. "1 wanted to see if he had any good lines th a t 1 coul d pi ck up." Carr follo wed Parke r for th ree laps before mo toring back into the lead, and it wasn't until the five-lap signal came out that the d uo really began to speed up. The pair swapped the lead tw ice in the fin al two la ps, and as th ey ra ced towards the flag it was Parker who led the charge. Carr pulled out of the draft jus t before the line and Parker hel pless ly wa tche d h is teammat e slipstrea m past an d on to the win. "That's the w ay it goes, there w as no thing 1 co uld do," said Pa rker.
