he wasn't nearly as dominant in the Nationals as he had been "indoors," and would win just one more round throughout the rest of the series. There seemed to be three levels of talent in the '93 125cc National MX series, with Henry and defending champ Jeff Emig in a tug-o'-war for the title on the elite top plane, McGrath just slightly off the pace, .and the rest of the class another shade slower. Henry was easily the most consistent, as he pos ted only three overall wins but finished out of the top four just once, while Emig was on-again, offagain; he scored five overall wins but came up short at the end. Only two rounds were won by someone other than Henry, Em ig or McGrath, and both were de bu t victories for Kawasaki pilots. At Unadilla Valley Sports Center in New Berlin, New York, Englishman Ja mes Do bb rod e to a steady 1-4 victory, marking the first lime a Brit had won a U.S. Na tional. The 12Scc series also ma rked the debut of teen sensation Robbie Reynard, pro bably the most highly touted rookie since Damon Bradshaw. Reynard, who signed a factory contract with Kawasaki for '94, was forced to wa tch fro m the sidelines through the first part of the season, but he turned 16 before round three at Mt. Morris, Pennsylvania, and finally got a chance to prove himself. Though abbreviated, Reynard's inaugural season was a busy one; he rode impressively to seventh overall at his first National, broke his wrist at his first supercross in San Jose, missed several ro unds while he recovered, and came back and rode with pain. The 12Scc series ended with a changing of the guard as Reynard earned his first-ever overall win at Steel City and showed that he's no doubt more than capable of filling the boots left behind by fellow Oklahoman Guy Cooper. 250cc U.S. G P The year of change in m o tocro ss wasn't limited strictly to AMA competition, as the United States Grand Prix in Budd s Creek, Maryland, also witnessed sev eral changes. Most obvious was the actual location; after years of hosting the event, Unadilla opted to pull out , citing difficulties in dealing with the FIM . With Motolink simultaneously backing out of the SOOcc U.S. GP, American race fans were left with the possibility of the U.S. not hosting a Grand Prix MX, but Budds Creek Raceway's Jo nathan Beasley came to the rescue. "This place (Budds Creek) was a forest when I first got it," said Beasley . "1 used to watch the race at Unadilla and dream about putting on a GP." Beasley's dream came true, and the GP proved to be one of the best gatherings of international MX talent in quite some time; nearly all of the top motocrossers from around the world we re pitted head-to-head for one race. And when the day was over, 1993 had seen yet another change; after 10 years of domina ting the U.S. 250cc MX GP, the Americans had been beaten on their hom e tu rf. Belgian Stefan Everts, com petin g in his first -ever U.S. GP, posted consisten t 1-3-2 moto finis hes to earn the overall win. Many people feel tha t Everts ' win is an example of the rise in the talent level of European motocrosser s. Further evi dence of that came at the recent Motocross des Na tions in Austria where the American team notched its record 13th~onsecutive victory by the narrowest of margins.
