I w as go ing good in turns three and four, bu t h e wa s smokin' through one and two . When he started to get aw ay I looked back and saw that I had a pretty good lead over third ." Beh ind H ill came the re st o f th e front-row starters: Fisher, Stan ley, Kopp and Bostrom. Fish er ran s tro ng and loo ked se t to fend off th e repeated a d va n ces of Stanl ey and Kopp, but d isaster struck on lap six. "I s tepp ed on the rear brak e a nd it jus t lock ed up," said Fis he r. "I had to start kickin g the master cylinde r before it wo uld let go, and from then on out I didn't have a rea r brake. "This is my eigh th Gra nd Nati onal TT win and now I'm tied for second with Dick Mann. Eklund ha s nine w ins, a nd to e ve n tie hi m would be a grea t honor, not only for me, but for his mem ory as well. I kinda w ish this race was three weeks ago, th en I could have kept my title hopes alive a little longer." After bein g passe d by Stan ley, Fisher gritted his teeth and upped the pace a b it, an effort that rew arded him with a career -hi gh Nation al fini sh of fou rth . Try as he might, Kopp wa s unable to find a way past Fisher, but in finishing fifth a lso enjoyed his best -ever fin ish., Bostrom finished a d ist ant six th with Jones hot on his rear tire.
