Smith had every thin g in control, staying a tum ahead of the second place battle between Thompso n a nd Stone. At th e midw.y point Sto ne slid out in a tu m a nd dropped to fifth. This gave Thompson some relief as he continued on to take ,"-'COnd behind Smith, who h.,d a five ,"-'Cond advant.ge at the checkered nag. " I ju st got out front a nd tried to ride smooth," said Smith. "I had a little trouble with lappers, but I really like racing at night." Smilh again had the quickest reaction time and le d Thompson, johner Faulkner and j .R. Terry at the seco nd moto start. Smi th opened up the throttle .nd slowly pulled away fro m the other 14 riders to take the checkered nag. "I just kept p ulli ng away. Thompson had an easy time in second place u ntil Stone caugh t up to him after a sixth-place start. Thompson , Stone and Faulkner engaged in a tight three-rider fight for third th a t ended when Stone land ed off the side of a jump and cras he d . Faulkner used an in s id e mov e on Th ompson to make the fin al pass for sec ond p lace on the last lap . Thompson earned seco nd overa ll with 2-3 fini shes over Faul kne r' s 6-2 score. Dale Barnett ea s ily w o n the firs t 250cc Beginner moto over Eddie Legiu. Bret Rand olp h put in an excellent ride, coming from a last place start to pressure Rich Cord es for third by the last lap . Rand olph ended up co llecti ng th ird in the moto when Cordes mistook the white flag for the checkered flag and pulled off the track a lap early. It was all Barnett in the secon d mote, leading every inch of the way for the overall victory . Legiu took a safe second well ahead of the fight between Randolph and Cord es for third . With the white nag out, Cordes ou t-braked Randolph going in to a tum only to be repassed on the next jump. Malvern MXwin to Long By Peggy Adamic MALVERN, OH SEPT. 4 , Rob Long rang up 2-1 moto finishes enroute to scoring the overal1 victory in the 250cc C class at Malve rn Moto Sport Park. Long g rabbed the lead off the line to begin mota one wi th Pat Cipu110 and Ryan Weaver close beh in d . Weaver quickly dispensed of Cipullo with jo hn Wigle motoring into third to begin lap three. Long and Weaver ran a wheel- Dee Wood (3) beat Tiffany Greenwood (2) for th e Women's Pro win al Perris MX. to-whe el batt le th rou gh th e fin a l lap w h en Weaver took over the lead for the first moto win. Long was next with Wigle, Don Loree and Ernie Berry rounding ou t the top five. When the ga te dropped to beg in moto two, long was aga in the front-runner with Weaver in tow. Long wen t untouched as he scored a wir e-to-wi re wi n with Weaver and Loree traiHng. Dick Math ias mot ored into fourth ahead of Ryan Klein. Dave Brammer was a double moto winn er in the 125cc C cla ss as the KTM rider took two start-to-finish moto wins. Brammer took the lead in the first moto with Jim Mart ines and Jason Pahanish close behind. While Brammer pulled away from the pack. Martines had his work cu t out for hi m as Pahanish rem ained on his rear wheel thro ugh the first five laps. Pahanish was able to d rive in to second with less than a lap to the checke red nag. Martines he ld third ahead of Ray Coll ier and Steve Spri ng . In mota two, Brammer was again in the lead through turn one wi th Pahanish on hi s rear wheel. The two riders rod e a tight race thro ugh lap thr ee when the y tangled. Pahanish wa s left tracksid e picking up his bike while Brammer went on to take the win. Mar tines, Collier, Steve Schonauer and Spri ng roun ded out the top five. In Open B class action, johnny Young con tinued his domi nation .of the class wi th another doubl e moto victory . Texan Dee Wood po sted an imp ressive fourmoto sweep of bot h the 125 and 250cc Pro classes d u r ing t he Women's Moto rspo rts Ass oci ation-pro mo ted Wome n 's MX Championships at Perris Raceway. Wood started her day on a posi tive no te with the holeshot in the firs t 12See Pro moto. Loca l racer Tami Rice was ru nning a st rong second followed by Au ssi e Ti ffa ny G ree nwood, a nd Hawaii's Cari na Chinen. Gree nwood was ted little tim e wit h Rice an d mad e her move at the start of the second lap . G reenwood wa s on the gas , an d in less than a lap caug ht and began to push Wood. With the lead on the line both riders set an awesome pace and pulled awa y from the field. The batt le continued until Greenwood bobbled and d ro p ped ba c k. Greenwood d id manage to get back on pace but her charge came too late to be cons idered a serious threat. Wood motored across the line for the win followed by Greenwood, Ch inen and Rice. Arizona's Diane Piper cam e from dead last to finish fifth. The second moto see med to duplicate the first, with Wood and Greenwood out front and battling. This time Piper started third but had to contend with a hard-charging Chinen. As the race wo re on, Greenwood seemed to wear down and slip off pace. Wood went on for the wi n whi le Greenwood sett led for seco nd. Chinen got the best of Pipe r for third by virtue of a last-lap pass. Teenager Jamie Pamintuan rounded ou t the top five in front Rice, who raced the greater part of the second moto wit h a flat rear tire. Woo d wa s back later in the day to post a wire- to-wi re win in the first 250cc Pro mota . Green woo d was once again the runner-up followed by Ch inen and Piper. Greenwood by this lime mu st have been ge tting tired of playin g seco nd fiddle to Wood . At the start of the second molo she roosted off the line wi th the holesh ot, Greenwood was blazing fast d uring the first pa rt of the moto and began to open a significant lead un til she fell off her motorcycle near the finish line. Wood inherited the lead and cruised to the mo to and overa ll win. Chinen made the best of G ree nwood's mishap and scored the runner-up position while Greenwood picked herself up off the ground for third. Last ye a r ' s First Timer class winne r, Christine Russell, mo ved up to the Beginner class for this year's event. Russell smoked the pack on an 80cc mach ine during the first moto. Cheri Feathergill bested Lauric Schipper for second while Bre n d a Yancy and julie Sokatch rounded the top fi ve. Russell looked liked she was on her way to a repeat performance in the second moto, bu t she fell hard at the base of the steep jump a t th e en d o f th e rocker s.
