"I started pretty good, but Ryno (Hughes) stuffed me off the track in the back section and I had to pla y catch up," said Reynard. Davis opened up an immediate lead that he would never relinquish, while Lamson found a way past Lechien on lap two. "I've always liked this track and I have a lot of fun racing up here," said Lechien, who hasn 't competed in a major event since the 1992 Orlando Supercross Series opener. "I still ride quite a bit. " . Once into second, Lamson was able to close in on Davis in the tighter, moretechnical s ec t io ns of the course, but would lose any ground gained on the faster parts. " Davis' b ik e was really fast, and I was riding a bo n e- s t oc k '94," said Lams on. " I d idn 't even g e t it unt il Friday night an d we d id n' t have a lot of time to ge t it d ial ed in. I'm not taking anything away from Ty, though, he rod e great." Davis did have a scary moment earl y in the race, though it d idn' t really cost him much time. As he raced through a flat, right-hander, Davis nea rly lost his front end and in order to keep fro m crashing, rode up onto the fence lining the track. "Yeah, tha t was pretty wild," sai d Davis. " It just .started to push, and the next th ing I knew, I wa s up on the fence." . Davis recovered quickly and continued to r ide comfortabl y a hea d of Lamson, while Hughes too k over third and rode equally unchallen ged . "I got into third and start ed to catch Lamso n, but I washed out the front end in the back section and backed off," said H ughes. "We' d b een ha v in g troubl e with the fron t end all week long." After being passed by Lamson and Hu ghes, Lechien set tled into fourth and fought off the late-race c h a rg e s of Reynard, who ha d recovered from his first-lap encounter with Hughes a nd m ade a credi ble cha rge through the p a ck . Reyna r d challenged Lech ie n repeatedly, but dropped off the pace in the final two laps. "I got a flat rea r .tire," said Reyna rd. "I had a lot of trouble getting past Butch Smith - he was bloc king me all over the place and I finally had to stu ff h im . After that I cau gh t up pretty easily, but then I got a flat." At the fi n is h , it w a s Dav is w ho crossed the finish line with a small lead over Lamso n . Hu gh es wa s a lon e in thi rd, wh il e Lechi en and Reynard ro unded out the top five. "It feels gr eat to return to motocross and beat these top gu ys," sa id Davis. " Eve ryone thinks that on ce you start riding off-roa d you get sl ower, but I think I proved them wron g today." Da v is also topped both motos of th e final round of the Maxx is Tires/Cellular One Sound of Thunder Series, held in conjunction with Friday's race program. Davis ripped off the line aboa rd his Kawasaki KLX6S0 in the first eig h t-lap mo to and was never se riously ch al lenged. Terry Fowler, Gordo n Ward and d efending series cha mpio n Mike Young tra iled Davis on the opening lap, but by the completion of lap two Davis en joyed a lO-second lead . You ng worked pas t Ward and Fowler for second , bu t coasted to a stop with a blown mo tor. At the checkered flag, it was Davis well ahead of Fowler, Ward and Larry Roese ler. Moto two was a repeat of the first, as Dav is smoked off the line and fla t-out sp anked the competition. Young ga ted second and held that position to the finish, but was unable to ma tch the pace set by Davis. Fow ler finis hed five sec onds behind Young, but we ll ah ead of KTM's Greg Zitterkopf. "I've won it a couple of times befo re, but I think that since I'm ge tting older, this one means the most." Fowler was second overall ah ead of War d , w ho finis hed fifth in moto two, but the b ig winner w as Zitter kopf. In finishing fou rth overall with 6-4 moto scores, Zitterkopf captured the series cha mpionship and will carry the numbe r one plate in nex t year's series. Rex Staten trounced the Vet Expert field in both l O-lap motos aboard his purple and g r een, Xtre me ZVar rier / FMF/ WOR/ KOR/ End u ra/ MMF/ Shoei -ba cked Kawa sak i KXSOO . Staten grabbed the holeshot in both mot os and ran away to a pair of devas tati ng wins. "I just rod e as ha rd as I had to," sa id the ageless Staten. "Last yea r I won the fin a l b u t I wa s DQ ' ed in one of my heats, so it was nice to win aga in today." H onda-mounted Willy Musgrave ca me out on top of a w ild battle with Marty Sm ith, Jeff Watts a nd form er Hond a, Suzuki and Kawasaki factory rid er Johnny O'Mara in the first rno to, but in moto two, O'Mara took runneru p honors ahead of Musgrave, Watts and Brad McC1eod. Kawasaki Team Gree n ' s Kev in Wind ha m was the cream of the crop in the 125 and 250cc Intermediate classes, a n d the AXO/Pro-Ci rcuit / Scott / H ammerhead Graphics /Dun lop / rider ran away with the wins in both finals. In th e 125cc Interm edi at e final , Windham scored a co me-from-be hi nd win over Robbie Skaggs and ea rly lead er Tim St aufenbeil , but posted a start-to- fini sh win in the 25 0cc In ter mediate final over Casey Johnson and Stufenbeil. "I tho ug ht Casey Johnson would give me more trouble," sa id Windha m. "But in the 125 class he cras hed a bunch, and in the 250s I was jus t faster. In both races I tried p retty hard for the first half of the race, then backed off on ce I got a good lead ." Dee An n Wood was the queen of the Wom en 's Expert class, as she posted 1-2 moto fin ishes and earned the overall win. Wood ran away with the win in the first moto, besting Ci ndy Col e, Kristy Sheal y, Corina Chinen a n d Tiffany Greenwood. Gr eenwood ran s tro ng in the earl y g o ing, but a multitud e of crashes kept her out of the lead pack. Greenw o od return ed with a vengeance in moto tw o and turned in a s ta r t-to- fin ish wi n. Wood moved in to second early on , bu t could do littl e to reel in the sp eed y Greenwood . Wood's 1-2 finis hes wer e goo d enough for the overa ll win, whil e Cole's 2-3 finis hes edged Green wood 's 5-1 for secon d overall. Ya maha-moun ted Joe Rya n nabb ed the wi n in the 12Scc Junior class, nipp ing ea rly lea d e r Sco t t Davis o n th e next-t o-last la p. Phil Richmond , Jason Fields and Bruce Maynor ro und ed out the top five at a distance. Su zu ki's Charley Bogard sped to a p a ir o f convincing mot o w ins in the Mini Expert class.
