took the lead away from Kronen by naili ng the throttle thro ugh the rockers. Not wanting to lose touch wi th the new lead er, both Blackwe ll and Cooper jett ed past Kronen on the back straight. Cooper, who is affectiona tely known a t Cyclela nd as "C ras h" Cooper, found himself p inned at the bottom of the pile. With each lap, his advan tage over Blackw ell was growi ng. At mid -race, ho wever, Harv ey 's bike s lowed drama tically and ca me to a stop at the end of the ba cks tra ight wi th a s uspected se ize d p is ton . With his main compe tition either on the gro und or ou t of the race, Blackwell was assured of the victory. The ie other Vet in the field, Ralph Blanchard, gated jus t inside the top 10 and needed three laps to move up to second place. By the time he go t second, Nye had checked ou t. Yet a nothe r dua l cla ss win wa s pos ted by Californian Keith M~1 Yes. Mayes won the 250cc B and Unlimited Amateur classes . He was one of the cleanest and fastest riders of the d ay.
