po le position, pu t his Godden int o the lead o ff
the start with Monell right beside h im in turns
one and two . Mone ll stayed even w ith McBride
down the back straight bu t went hi gh in tu rn
thr ee while McBride he ld tight to the po le and
beg a n to pu ll away. Following McBride's lin e,
John Lew is moved in to do ba ttle with Monell
an d succeded in tak ing over second. McBride
was long gone by then, however, and extended
the bounty yet ano ther week.

Rusty Eves took his first 250cc w in of the year
over McKee. John Winsett got a slow start an d
was lucky to ge t fou rth. McKee took the 600ec
class . Min is kept a little of the status quo, with
Ben Miller ta king the 65cc class, a nd Ben Glisson
an d Cor ey Ha rme s ta king their respective age
groups in the sSec classes .
In th e combined 2S0cc/750cc A final , Bob
Sweeten a nd Clare nce Bull used their front row
starting pos itions to eme rge just in front of Tod d
Winse tt, Pau l Lynch and Ricky Winsett. With the
750s jus t in front, the 2S0s battled closely with
Ly nch tak ing th e lead on th e th ird lap. Ricky
winsett stayed close un til his bike quit on the last
lap . Sweeten crossed the line in "first place.
Sweeten stayed close to Diem in the Veteran
final, bu t on th is track, Diem's Honda of Diem's
was quic ke r, and he held on for th e win. Th e

Merryman . Lynch, Phil Libhart and N ick Taylor.
Taylor slid out on the th ird lap , wh ile Lynch
too k control of second on th e fifth la p , with
Merryman batt ling Libha rt to the wire for third .

Paul Allison grabbed the sSec lead from Tom
Skethway and Jake John son. The ha rd- cha rging
Johnson took seco nd on the seco nd lap, and got

Joel Mon ell went fr om contender to vic to r a t
Champion Speed way w he n he ca p tu red the
Handi cap main eve n t. Monell had been a consis tent top finisher th is seaso n, bu t un til now had
been una ble to hold off the back yard-line rs in
the six-la p finals.
Monell ascended to the main event by taking
the second tran sfer spot in the semi numbe r one.
In the main. Mon ell ga ted off th e 20 ya rd line
next to Jeremi ah Smi th-After the first lap Monell
we nt past Matt Otto for second and se t his sights
on Rick Secoolish.
Into lap three Monell took a high line around
Se coo li s h and forged in to t he le a d . Whil e
Secoo lish wa s holding off the cha rges of Sm ith
and Lenny McBride, Monell has clear sa iling to
inc rease h is lead over the field and w in his firs t
ma in eve nt of the seaso n.

Another recently crowned Na tiona l Cha mp ion,
Warren Diem, returned to his w inning ways taking the Veteran and 600cc A classes. As long as
he didn't have bike trouble, Diem was basica lly
conceded the win as the only rid er wh o can keep
him in sig ht, Bob Swee ten, was forced to ride his
Ha rley XR750 beca use his nephew " reclaimed "
h is 600 fo r s o m e Pr o ra ce s thi s wee k. Lew
Woods won the Pro class.
The B classes had all kinds of strange happe n ing s, as riders who have d omi nated th e ir
class a ll se ason got beat and beat bad in most
cases . After winning every start in the 85cc class,
