VOICES Letters tothe editor Not enough hay b ales AMA supe rbikes a t Wa tk ins Glen? I can ' t be lieve th e p owers- th at-be a re even thi nki ng about (holding an AMA N a t ional Champ ion ship Road Race Series round at Watkins Glen). I'd like to be able to d rive the short d istance to the Glen and see an AMA Na tional, but the lack of run-off area conde mn s it to a caronly (ra ce) circuit. Please d on't do it, there aren't enough hay bal es in New York state to make that track safe for the riders. Jake Coye Perkinsvi lle, NY #31 says thanks I wi sh I co uld personally thank everyone who has been so supportive of me since my accident in Springfield, Illinois, h ow e ve r, so many peop le have been involved tha t it is impossible to do that. Therefo re, through Cycle New s I would like to express my appreciation to everyone involved with the auction tha t wa s held in m y behal f a t Peoria, Illinois. I w o u ld especially li ke to tha nk Larry Maiers, who devoted his personal time in coor di n a ti ng the fu n d ra iser . Th e money raised will help w ith my hospital bills. I w ill be out of competition for the res t of the National dirt track season. If a ll goes w ell, I plan on returning to ac tion at the indoor ice racing circui t tha t starts in December, and then return to d irt tracking at Daytona in '94. Dan Ing ram Indianapolis, IN Godspeed, G .E. The single g re ates t ben e fi t o f b ein g involved in mot orc yclin g ha s to be the p eople as sociat ed with the sport. They are typically fu ll o f life an d g en u ine friends. Geo ff Eldr id ge, o wn e r /ed ito r o f Aus tralasia n Dirt Bike maga zine, was o ne suc h p e rs on. N ot o n ly w a s he involved in eve ry facet of the sport from winn ing med a Is a t the ISDE to ra cin g vin tage mo tocross just for fun, he was a dynamic personality. Ju st prior to depa rt ing o n the first day of the Acerb is Nevada Rally, he told me, "This is no t as mu ch a race as it is an adven ture in to th e las t frontier . An ex plora tion of th e unkn ow n. Exciti ng stu ff!" That prophetic statemen t was his philosophy on life. H is life, love and bus iness were all in tertw i n ed w ith mot orcycles and mot or cycling people, so it was fitting, if not p rofoun d that his life sho uld end d oing something he had such a deep passion for. He w ill al ways be remem bered . He w ill a lw ays b e m is s ed . And h e will always be lov ed. Godsp eed, G.E . May your adventure never end . Rick Doughty Vintage Iron Fresno, CA Thumbs down on one moto After a tten d ing my first National MX, MotoFest '93 at Glen Helen, I felt like a little kid in a candy shop. The grea t outdoors, intense heat, freedom to view the event fro m any vantage point, girls in their "daisys" ...but what is th is ? One on e main moto? This new "made for TV " format really s ucks . You don't see golf ch anging fro m their standard 18-ho le courses to a one-hole course to ma ke it e asier for people to follo w . ' In tennis , they ju st don't make love and win. Oh no, they play long grueling matches, sets, th e breaks, etc... Each sport has its own set of ru les, its own players, even its own fans . So let's not waste our efforts tr ying to please people who cou ldn ' t care less if we had on e, two, or 10 motos. This is our sport, we are the fans, we are the p layers, so let us make the ru les that we like and understand. Two motos are a d istingu ished part o f motocross, le t's keep 'em both. Remember, motocross is motocross. It's not supercross in the summer. Shawn Fluken Saugus,CA lette rs to the editor should be se n t to Vo ice s, Cycle News, P.O.
