After losing the draft he se ttled for fifth. Com ing into the final race Ien a tsch was lo cked in a ba ttl e with Dan ny Walker and Jona tha n Cornwell for third in the championship. The highest placed finish er would likely get the spot and, today, it was lentasch. "Thi s, to me, is a major th rill ," the Sport Rider magazine ed itor said . "We ca me up h e r e to b ea t Walker and Corn well and we did." Corn well was ch alle ng ing Iena tsch for fourth w he n he oversho t the firs t tu rn ea rly in the race, d ropping we ll bac k before recovering to finish seve nt h. Walker was still feeling"the effects of a concussion suffere d in practice and said he felt disoriented the w ho le ra ce. He ende d up 10th. The final points in the bat tle for third r ea d: Ienatsch - 236, Cornwell - 227, Walker - 225. Most of the races this year have been - for seco nd pl ace, b ut tod ay woul d be d ifferent. It wou ld be for third. Rid in g before a la rge ga thering o f family and friend s, Filice jetted to the lead and, less tha n 20 min utes later, the w in. By th e fourth of 19 laps he held over a three-second cushion which he see med to be s tre tching a t about a second a ·Iap. Hal fway into the race he was up by close to 12 seconds, a cushion he would amass on the next lap before he backed off to the finish. "Halfwa y th rou gh the ra ce I was slow ing down a little too much, being too easy on the bike," Filice said. "1 was d o in g thin g s that I wa sn' t d oing all weekend. I p icke d u p the pace and it went grea t after that. They gave me plus 11 and plus 12 and then I calmed myself back down. The last five lap s went pretty quick. Th e last la p I was cra w ling around there." Second place was de cided as swiftly as Filic e h ad decided first. Moto Liberty /Nankai's Mo ri, though unable to run down Filice, was putting ground on third place almost as quickly as he was losing it to first. Halfway into the race he had close to ei gh t seconds on Terranova and that's about what the margin would be at the end, the battle .for fourth forci ng th e pace that und id Terran ova. "1 tried at first for Jimmy Filice and I s tud ied his lines, but it was ver y diffi cu lt," Mori said. The ba ttle for fourth was the one to watch, four rid er s o u t to cha se down Terranova, two of them inv olved in the championship . Southwest Motorspor ts ' Dann y Walker was off the line fourth ahead of Ienatsch, Cornwell, Mike Sullivan, and D'Aluisio , But by the third lap he was down a spot and, as the race wo re on, Walker wore d own and ende d up holding o n fo r 10 th aft er thinkin g ab ou t pulling in. "I was so di sorien ted, I didn't want to do something stupid," Walker said. "1 had no percep tion of braking or speed. Many times I thought abou t pulling in, bu t 1 thought that was the sissy thing to do . All I could d o is hope that Nick would d ice w ith Co rn well and th ey wo uld take each other out." On the seventh lap lenatsch headed the battle for fourth w ith Cornwell fifth and Salaverria sixth in front of Walker. The next lap would be Cornwell's undoing , the Can ad ian overshooting the first turn at the star t of the eighth lap as he tried to outbrake Ientasch. He got back on the track, but not before losing seven spots. . "1 ca me up beh ind Nick and I was go in g to sh oot past h im when I sa id ' Whe re' s he go ing?' I'd missed my bra ke-ma rker because I was concentra ting on him," Cornwell said. "I was just trying to cool it and stay with Nick and Dan ny a nd see wha t transpire d. What transpired wasn' t what I wan ted to transpi re ." Ne ve r o ne to quit, Co rn we ll fought hi s way back up to a seven thplace finish. Cornwell' s depa rture made it a threerider race for fou rt h, le na tsch lead ing Salaverria and Sullivan, tho ugh all three would lead in the co urse of th e next th ree la p s. On th e 14th Ienatsch was back in fro nt, Salaver ria fift h a nd Sull ivan a close six th. A lap lat er an d Sullivan lost tou ch, p ushing th e front end going down through turn six a nd losing the draft on the run up to tu rn seven. " I go t o ff lin e a littl e bit. There's so me rip ples there that the fron t end was wa lkin g over," Sulli van sa id. "I go t o ff th e gas a litt le b it a nd tha t's when I los t Al and Nick. It was a close ca ll and 1 wa nted to ma ke s u re I finished ." For the final laps, Salaverr ia st uc k close to Ienatsch, but was foiled in every attemp t to pass. " It co ul d'v e been bet te r," he said after finish in g fourth . "I s tarted from d ead last because I broke my crankshaft on the first lap of qualifying. My crew spen t all night piecing it together from worn-out parts. "Ienatsch had serious motor on me. H e could beat me o u t of turn six and up to seven. He was hanging me up in turn 10. I had to go in the dirt to try to pass him. The last lap , when Geep fell, 1 pretty much had N ick figured out. I th ought I was going to hit Geep and Ni ck go t a way. I reeled him back in a nd w ent tight in turn 11 , but he blocked m e and that was that, " Salav erri a said. Sullivan was fifth with Chris D'Aluisio finishin g sixth. "It hurts," D' Aluisio said after the race, his broken righ t foot hooked up to a mu scle stimulator and wrapped with an ice pack. "It hurt a lot the whole race. Af first 1 was with the lead group and my bike lost power and I dropped back . It jus t wouldn 't pull at all. Laps six through 10 were the fastest, then I started to fade."
