Albertyn clinches
title at Finnish GP

h on o r s at th e Finn ish GP . A lber ty n
clinched the 250cc titl e with one round
still le ft in th e series. The Dutch-ba sed
Ho nd a rider thus became the third rider
to sec u re back-t o -back 125 a nd 25 0cc
titles. His predecessors wer e Dutchman
Jo h n Van den Be r k (198 7/'88) a n d
.Frenchma n Jean-Michel Bayle (1988/'89),
while Ame rican s Tra mpas Pa rker and
Donni e Schm it earned the titles in spans
of three years. .
Needing just 17 p oints to sco re the
title in Finland, even if his closest riva l
Belgian Stefan Everts won every remaining mota, Albertyn finished 11th in the
opening moto following a first- lap crash,
but he o fficially clinc hed the title in the
second mota by p lacing third .
In the third mota, despite know ing he
h ad a lre ady wra p ped up t h e ti t le,
Albertyn cam e ou t and b lew everybody
awa y.
Ev erts s cored the o ve ra ll win b y
recordi ng 2+2 mota finishes .
It was a n up-a n d -d own d a y fo r
Schmit. He won the opening mota by 10
seco n d s over Ev erts, b u t n a r rowly
es ca ped injury in race three when h is
bike barely missed him after he was catapulted from the mach ine at high speed.
Schmit is now assured second place in
the series point standings, while Everts is
a shoo -in for third.
American Tram pas Par ker had a successful comeback. In his first race sin ce
breaking his w rist at the Belgian GP in
June, the KTM rid er scored tw o top-six
placings on the sandy track to stay sixth
in the series stand ings .
