I thought that this money was gu ara nteed to be used for OHV projects. It seems to me tha t there are two options that have not yet been tri ed : 1. We coul d sue the state for breaking the law and misappropriating the fun d s. 2. We cou ld us e up the funds more quickly so that the governor doesn't see this large sum of money sitting in the bank. Maybe these seemingly simple solutions are not workable. If that is the case, can you tell me why? Curtis Kimble SanJose,CA ONTHE FRONT PAGE: Team Yamaha's Jeff Emig posted his fifth win of the 125cc National MXSeries at Spring Creek MX Park, and with two rounds to go, the defending champ has a slim five-point lead in the point standings. There are only two things guaranteed in life - death and taxes (and you can opt not to pay the latter if you don 't mind serving tim e). According to lobbyist Bob Hamm, suing a state government is an expensive proposition with high risk and none of the motorcyclist organizations have pockets deep enough to initiate a suit, although several individuals are looking into doing just that. As fo r spending the money quickly, that's certainly been attempted but has been blocked by a legislature that won't appropriate the funds ...Editor. Broken promises This letter is to complain and quest ion . Both my son and his friend wo rked hard to win their respective classes in the CMC Golden State N ationa ls early in the year. Each won several contingency prizes. The . b o y s w e re to fill out forms and r etu rn them to the contingency p rize sponso rs (PIl, Ragged Edge Ra cing, AXO /Renth al, Suns tar, O ' Neal Racing) . My son's friend , w ho had won gloves from O'Neal, told my so n not to bother sending hi s form to O 'Neal for the hat he had wo n as he had not received his pr ize from O'Nea l that he had won in an o th er race series. However, bo th did send the ir forms to O'Neal (an d th e other contingency prize _sponsors) within one week of the series' finish . They both received all the products from all the sponsors excep t O' Neal. W he n my son 's friend won a Starwest Series race in June, one of the p rizes w as a jersey from O 'Neal an d he co m men ted that here 'w as another prize he w ould not recei ve fr o m them. Th is prompted a call from me o n June 24 to Dave Wes tfall at O ' Neal to discu ss not re ceiving pri zes fro m the Golden Sta te Serie s back in Febru ary. Dave ex plai ned th a t several fo rm s had been mis fil ed. He said he would immed iately send out the prizes. I called Dave again on July 12 to tell . him that the boys had not received thei r p ri zes. He sta ted tha t there was no problem a nd again sa id that for ms ha d been misfiled and that he wo uld 'get the prizes out by the end . of the week. I called Dave again on Jul y 20 and he said he had the form s on his desk and that they just neede d s o me kind of approval (that s h o u ld have been gotten in February) and that the boys should receive the ir prizes by the end of the week. It is now July 29 and I'm really upset. Not that our p rize had any particular value but that a company all o ws th emsel ves to get positi ve publicity by ann ouncing that th ey are giving prizes and then they don' t send them out. I am curious if other racers ha ve had a sim ilar problem. If so, let this letter serve as a warning to other rac ers who are exp ecting anything from O'Neal Racing. Claudia Thrift Brea, CA Westfall called us after we faxed him a copy of the above letter on July 29 and he said the contingency prizes would be sent immediately. He called Thrift that same day and told her the same thing. Over two weeks later, on August 13, Thrift said her son was still waiting on his prize from O'Neal...Editor. Nice guy, but... Regarding the popularity contest that selected the Motocross des Nat ions team : I th ink Jeremy McGrath is a nice guy and a great supercross rider, but how did he end up assigned to ride a 250 on an outd oor track? I am tired of people thinking of supercross as motocross. Stephen Beeler Port Huron, MI Fair an d square As a fan of Grand Prix road racing, I have a fair concept of how a racer becomes a World Champion: by winning races or finishing in one of the other top 15 finishing positions, riders are awarded points towards the championship. At the season's end, whoever ha s the highest number of points is the World Champion, th e fastest , smartest, most consistent racer of that season. Evidently, Kenny Roberts has a different view. He believes that World Championships should be decided by manipulating the finishing order through pit signals telling the fastest rider to take a "dive" and allow someone slower on that day to w in . Who d id he learn that from? Perhaps Don King? Isn 't that fraud? Fortunately fo r the thousands of pay ing fans that day in England, Luca Cadalora d idn't care about pit signals or someone else's race. He was there to race and race he did. If Wayne Rainey or someone else can 't w in h on estl y, then they are not a true World Champion. Did Kenny ever give up a win for someone else's benefit ? The fan s and the true racers in the field deserve better than "fixed" races . What's next, Kenny, offeri ng bribes via pit signals to Schwantz and Doohan? Go fast or go home?
