~ ROAD I!ACE AMA National Championship~R___a_e_e_i_s_R_ou_nd_9 oad R c S r e : e tf§#$,!! ~ _ Filicewins record eighth time By Henny Ray Abrams LEXINGTON, OH, AUG. 8 a y n e Rainey Racing/Otsuka Electronics' Jimmy Filice contin. ues to re-write the record books, ex ten d ing his season total to a new record of ei gh t wins with his rec ord sha ttering victory in the 250cc GP race at Mid-Ohio. It was a typical Filice romp: Taking co m m a nd a lmo s t from the s ta rt, the Californi an pulled away to a nearly ei gh t seco nd margin on second pla ce wi th five laps to go, backing off to win W An emotional Dale Quarterley shed tears in Mid-Ohio's winner's circle. 6 his normal last-lap grasp will never be . known, but the Texan was content with his first AMA Superbike National Championship : "Five or six laps from the end I was right behind Dale when something came loose," Polen explained. "The engine sounded different, the chassis felt different, and I thought, Tm in big trou ble.' The engine is the main stress member on the Ducati and it (the broken engine mount) made it difficult to ride. All I wanted to do wa s fin ish . That was my main goal at that point. There will be a big party in Europe." Behind the top four came Stevens in his second best outing of the year. "I was just pacing the field," he said. "I wasn't in a big hurry there in the beginning because 1 didn't want to bum up the tire. When it (the tire) went off 1couldn't keep screwing it down like the other guys . We'll get it. .We're getting closer." Edwards struggled from the moment he arrived at Mid-Ohio , And those struggles continued right through the race. "I hadn't gone, fast all weekend," the youngster said. "I had some ground clearance problems yesterday and we raised the rear. I did some 31s, but that was with the soft tires. It was hooking up then, but on the ha rder tire it wouldn 't. I had ground clearance problems, but I should've raised the whole bike up. I tried to chan ge my riding style with it d ragging, but I tucked the front three times and I couldn't get a drive. I just set it up poorly. Hey, it's my rookie year · I'm still learning." According to team owner Eraldo Ferracci, Picotte too was the victim of poor setup. "He had it too soft in the front," Ferracci said. Among the few retirees was Guenette, his Yamaha's EXUPexhaust valve coming derailed on the 24th lap while he was running in the top 10; dirt tracker Larry Pegram finished 14th in his first race back since breaking his leg at Phoenix in February; and Colorado 's Don Hough finished 16th in his fi rs t-eve r AMA Superbike National. 0\' Results S8 QUALIFYING: 1.
