H e also kn ew tha t the O ld Hairpin was his best chance for a pass and that's where he de cided to go by on the penultima te lap. "He was all over me," Rainey said. "1 felt him right there at the Old Hairpin so 1 changed my line to try and stop him com ing by, bu t that lap 1 didn't get it tu rned fast enough and he go t under me." But I'm not going to dwell on it." While the Marlboro team was p ulling awa y, Niall Mackenzie was doing some catching up. Tenth at the end of the first lap, the Scot moved up one spot each of the next two laps, then to seventh on the fifth lap where he g o t stuck behind Beattie, the Australian trying to keep on two w heels. Mack en zie was into sixth on th e ninth lap and Beattie knew he was helpless to answer. "When N iall Macken z ie came by, ' th ere was nothing 1 could d o to keep up," Beattie said. "He was riding well for sure, but he wa s getting out of the chicane cleanly while 1 was sliding. 1 was los ing lOths of a second he re and there but over a race distance th e time difference mounts up ." On the 16th lap Mackenzie would overtake Rothma ns Honda 's Shinichi Itoh w ho was los ing rear tire traction and no t up to the challenge. Criville was the next victim, trying to catch up to Fogarty while at the same time aware that Mackenzie was on the move. Wi th less than 12 la ps to go C riville lost the fr on t end , crashing
