v ICES 0 Letters to the editor A legend I had the pleasure of going to the last ro und of the National 250cc MX Series at San Bern ard ino, California, with my ni ne-year-o ld daughter and so me good frien ds. No t only di d we have a great time ther e, but something special happened. Just mi nutes before the start of the 250cc fina l, I realized I needed to make a phone call. I asked the closest person with an event staff shirt on where the neares t pay phone was. Th e person was w alki ng b y w it h kin d o f a hu rried stride, but he politely stopped an d sai d, " Follow me . I'll s h o w yo u ." I o nly caught a glimpse of the side of his face as we took off walking and I thoug h t to m y s e lf , "I s th at. .. " He wal ked m y daugh ter and m e several yards out of his w ay around on e of th e big d isp lay ten ts a n d o ve r to a hole in the fence where he made sure I could find the res t of th e w ay. I lo o ke d at him and sa id, "Thanks a lo t," and he said, w ith hi s Bel gian accent, "You're w elcome," and took off. My friend came u p to me and sa id, "Do yo u know who that w as?" I sai d, "Yes, that was Roger DeCoster." Thanks, Roge r. There is no doubt in my mind why you are one of the sport's greatest legends. Scott Pan gburn Fullert on, CA Godspeed, Tom The race on Saturday, July 17, will be one I can never forget. This w as a day Tom Boyce had looked forward to for mon ths. The d ay was wonderful - for the most pa rt. Tom had fun, the bike ran great all day and he d idn't finis h las t, so to u s th at d a y wa s p e rfect. Unfo rtu na tely, it was the last race Tom will ever run. But be lieve me, I w ouldn't have changed an ythin g except the end of the da y! To all of the nameless and exceptional people who tried so gal antly to save Tom, there are no words to su fficien tly thank you. When a tragedy such as this happens, we must look for the positive to draw from to make it through the days ahead. As one of our friends told me, Tom died at the place he loved - the race track. So to all of you who knew Tom, remember him with a smile on your face because he loved life and lived his life with pa ssion and love . Brigid Boyce Ben Boyce Vikki Creamer Dayton,OH TOil! Name of the game Ricky Graham was gi v e n a wri tten warning for aggressive rid ing in the 883 class at the Syracuse Mile. From w ha t I gather, a group of riders wen t to Referee Bruce Bober and compla in ed . I' m not exactly sure who the riders w ere and until I hear their side, I won't mention their names , but I was su rp rised and disa ppo inted . Maybe the racers involved co ul d s tep forward and ex plain wha t they we re trying to accomplish. It w ould be nice to know for sure so the racing public would know who the whining cry ba bies are. It seems to m e th at aggress ive rid ing is wha t dirt tra ck ra ci n g is all about. Could it be so me of the rac ers who can't catch Ricky ar e trying to get the AMA to slo w him down? A fte r seeing the incid e nt o n MotoWorld, it didn't look that bad. I know TV coverage can be deceiving but it sh ou ld be looked at. Could it be an AMA officia l made a mistak e? I'm sure it would be the "firs t time" (ha ). What happens when and if they are w rong? I think, nothing. What is the AMA do ing g iving a warnin g beca u se the rid ers com p la ined ? Let the AMA tak e the flac k . Who's running d irt track- raci ng, the riders or the AMA ? If the riders don't like racing with aggressive (not reckless) riders, th ey might try checkers. I hope the riders who co mplained don't ha ve the sa m e th in g h appe n to them . The championshi p should be d ecided on the track, not by the AM A or complaining riders.
