AMAICCS 750cc Supersport Series: Round 9 Pridmore goes the distance By Pa u l Carruthers Pho to by Henny Ray Abrams LEXINGTON, OH, AUG.7 lagued by bad luck for the majority of the season, it took Jason Pridmore until the ninth of 10 rounds to finally win a 750cc Supersport final in 1993. And they said winn ing the first one was hard. Last year Prid more wo n two races on his way to finishing second in the championship behin d Scott Russell, but th is year the road has been a little bumpier. Still, Class Racing seemed to get all its redemption in one afternoon as the team put together a 1-2 tally with Fritz Kling getting the team's second Kawasaki ZX7 into second place. Third place went to championship leader Britt Turkington on the Yoshimura Suzuki. Although this race belonged to the Class Racing boys, the championship still appears to be controlled by Turkington with one round remaining at Sears Point. Turkington leads Muzzy Ka wasa ki ' s Tak a hir o So hwa, fifth a t Mid-O hio, b y 25 poin ts . Gera ld Rothman [r., fourth here tod ay, is thir d with 225 points, eight poin ts clear of Kling a nd n ine po ints in fr ont of Pridmore, who finishe d second three times this year before securing' his firs t win her e today. At the drop of the flag , Tu rkington nailed down hi s normal holeshot and led the way into turn one. The Texan continued to lead until Pridmore dove Underneath the Suzuki in tum 14 to end the first lap . From there Pridmore just put his head down and split, leading by a full second after three laps, 35 seconds after six laps before keeping pace to eventually win by 421 seconds. "I'm happy that we finally got to win one of these races," Pridmore said later. P Scott Zampach scored his fou rth 883 series win at Mid-Ohio, topping Andy Fenwick by .883, yes .883 seconds. ( "We've had some bad luck. It's tough to be out front by yourself - it gives you a lot to think about. Today was my time. Fritz's (Kling) is coming. He was riding with a broken ankle toda y." Kling, and his broken ankle, had a tougher go of moving forward. The tall and lanky rider from Lansing, Michigan, finished the first lap in fifth. Moved to fourth a lap later before settling in behind Turkington for tw o more laps . On the sixth lap, Kling was in second place and he too started to pull away from the battle behind him. That race for third went the distance with Suzuki teammates Turkington and Rothman going at it for the duration. At the finish line, it was Turkington by an eyelash over his upstart teammate. So hwa's ride to fifth was mostly uneventful. For while the Japanese rider threatened the Turkington/Rothman duel a t one point, he eventually slowed to finis h a comfortable fifth . Aaron Ya tes, James Randolph, Tray Batey, Jim Leslie and Mark McDan iel filled the top 10. "At least it was my teammate who I finished second to," Kling said. "Last year it was Scott Russell - th is year it was my teamma te. I jus t ran my race and finally go t a w a y from tho se Suz ukis." " I was giving it everything I had," Turkington admitted. "The Yosh team is A- I; we did the best we could. It ju st wasn't our day." Pridmore knew that Kling would be his b iggest threat. " I really felt my toughest competition would be my tea mma te. It's ha rd to pass here. I just wanted to get by Britt early and not let him know where I was coming from ." tN Results 750cc ss FINAL: I. Jason Prid more (Ka w ); 2. Fri tz Kling (Ka w) ; 3. Zampach w by .8 ins 83 By Henny Ray Abrams LEXINGTON, OH, AUG.8 t looked like it was going to be easy; Tilley's H-D's Scott Zampach's fou rth win of the Harley-Davidson TwinSport Series . But a splendid battle for second carried a trio of riders to within striking d istance of the defending champion, though he was able' to hold on a nd w in by the appropriate margin of .883 seconds. "There was a whole group of riders chasing me down," Zampach sai d after taking the checkered flag a t Mid-Ohio. "I hadto keep my wits ab ou t me and no t ge t excited. The traffic at the end was a problem." Zampach d ed icated the win to his fiancee, He completed the I l-Ia p, 25-mile race in 19 minutes, 1.84 seconds a t an 8 average speed of 83.233 mph and earned $1700 from the $8000 H-D TwinSports purse. The bigger numbers, however, are in the championship point sta nd ings . With two races to go, at Sears Poi nt and Daytona, Zampach leads Shawn Higbee, fourth today, 315 to 289, in the qu est to keep the nu mber one plate. H-D of Jamestown's Higbee finished at the tail end of the ba ttle for the runner-up spot, though he was as high as second. Hal 's H-D's Andy Fenwick took over second on the eighth lap , holding the spot to finish in front of Jim Leslie. It was Fenwick's third consecutive runnerup result. Low Country H-D's Ch uck Blackmon was fifth in front of Richa rd Koehler. The "Z-Man" shot to the hea d of the field an d began to p ull away posthaste . By the third of eleven laps he had a 1.6 second lead an d ap pea red to be stretching it at will. Nea rly four second on the sixth lap, the lead, and win , looked safe, unti l the battle for seconds inched ever closer to Zampach. With a lap to go his cushion had shrunk to less than 15 second s, but he was able to stay in front and take the victory. The battle for second wasn't as clear cut. Higbee was the early second place occupant, then Leslie caught him up on the sixth lap . Two laps later and Fenwick joined the trio, qu ickly moving to the front of the trio as the leaders began cutting through backmarkers. Fenwick had gotten away just inside the top' 10 off the I start and was forced to work his way forward . Once in second he wasn't moving, though he might have do ne better if the start had gone better. "I had to work hard after being eighth or ninth at the start," Fenwick said. "If I'd have gotten a better start, I might've been able to win . Not only was I catching Scott, but! w as trying to sha ke the guys behind me. Third and four th were swapp ing back an d forth, Leslie getting it back for good on the fina l lap to score his bes t finish of the yea r. "Any ti me yo u' re runni ng beh ind these two guys yo u' re ha ppy to be on the podium," Leslie said. "After breaking m y arm here a ye ar ago I didn't wa n t to be in timidated by thi s pl ace. Sha w n Higbee was all over me. I felt kind of bad in one sense that I might be taking points away from him, but racing's racing." H igbee was a close fourth, well in fro nt of th e battle for fifth w hi ch was being waged b y C h uck Blackmon, Richard Koeh ler, Scott Gray, and Billy Graef. Blackmon moved into fifth on the fifth lap , and though pressed, was never head ed . The spots behind him changed constantly and weren't d ecided until the ninth lap when Koehler m oved up to sixth, Gray took over seventh, and Graef dropped to eighth, ma king Mid -O hio the thir d race in a row that he's finished in tha t spot. tN Results H·D lWNSPRT FINAL: 1.
