eMOTOCROSS e 125/250cc MX Series: Round 8/Final round ~~~ Jeff Emig (1), Mike Craig (24) and runner-up Ezra Lusk (43) diced in the 125cc class. p ound e d. The Yamaha pilot's bike began to sp u tter, and after he n ea rl y went down ov er the finish line jum p, 14 the YZ came to a halt. Emig kicke d it over a few times, rem oved his goggles, and tried aga in . The motor finally li t, and Emig donned his goggles and rejoined the race, but not before he was passed by a charging Lusk, along with Cra ig and Huffman. "We 've been having troubles with the carb all weekend," said Emig, who also exp erienced carburetion problems in the 125cc support race at the Budds Creek US. 250cc MX GP two weeks earlier. "We went through it (the carb) and cou ld n' t find anything. I don't know what it was." Emig's troubles gave Henry a nine- . second lead over Lusk, and though the Su zuki rider was charging h ard, he wasn 't able to make much of a dent. The real battle was between Craig and Huffman over third. Craig had' track banners wrapped in his rear wheel, bu t fortunately for him, his braking performance wasn 't effected. The battle started on the sixth lap, and Huffman finally go t around the Kawasaki rider on lap seven. Craig grabbed the spot back on the same lap, but it all went for naught, as he went down five laps later. "I ha d it, but 1 got some headshake and went down on the back s traigh t," said Craig, who was riding in just his seco nd National s inc e breaking his ankle. "I felt awesome. A little more and I'll be up to where I was before 1 got hurt." Henry cruised to the w in, though he slowed slightly on the last coup le laps and had to be helped off his bike. The televisio n crew th a t was waiting to interview Henry carried h im off to a s hady spo t and Scott Goggles' Bevo Forti helped him out of h is gear and poured water on him. "We were trying to figu re it out, and 1 think the problem was more the smog than the heat," said Henry. "I felt fine until about three laps to go. My chest felt really congested and 1 couldn 't breathe. 1 backed off a little, and Lusk wasn't catch ing me, so 1was okay." Lusk finished a distant second, and was content with the result. "I had no problems for a change. 1 didn't make any ma jor mistakes. I might ha ve been able to catch him (Henry), but catching and passing are two different things." Third was Huffman, who benefited from Craig's fall to equal his best finish of the series thus far . Emig sal vaged a fourth-place finish and Hughes finished . fifth after completing lap one in 25th place. "I've only been riding a week, and 1 felt a little jittery at first, " said Hughes. "Running and tha t stuff doesn't compare to riding. My thumb felt fine, but 1 . just got tired. 1 tried to ride smoo th and conserve energy." Kaw asaki Team Green rider Robb ie Reynard finished 18th overall, slowed by the pain of his still-healing wrist. "I landed short ov er a table a couple of times, and 1 p opped my wrist," said Reynard. "It was hurting, so 1backed off and finished . It still hurts. 1 d idn't ride hard enough to get hot." m Results 125 HEAT 1: I . Jeremy McGra th (Han); 2. Doug Henry (Hon); 3. Damon Hu lfm.ln (Suz); 4. Jeff Dement (Yom); S. Tim Ferry (Yom); 6.
