open s more qui ckly than it did on last year ' s b i ke . Also , in an a ttem p t to increase low-end and midrange power, the ex ha us t a nd tr an sfer ports w ere resha ped . A stro nger ignition syst em is u sed and the crankshaft's rotation al mass was increased 7%. In addition, the 250 got th e steel clutch pla tes an d ad ded clutch spring preload that the 125 received. While the 125's transmission is id entical to last year's model, the 250 got a wider gear rati o for first and second gears and closer ratios for third, fourth and fifth gears. The YZSOF remains the same as the '93 mod el, wi th the exception of a .3mm lar ger rea r sp o ke dia m e te r, im proved wa ter pump, new ignition curve, different low er-en d bearing and increased frame gussetting. At $2699, retail cost is $200 higher tha n on last year's model. While the YZ mod els have been consistently improved with the pa ssing of each model year, the WR250 is normally at least one model year'behind in the update department. This year, however, off-readers have reason to rejoice. The '94 WR250ZF is completely new, ba sed on the '94 YZ250 with special compone nts add ed for off-road use . The motor is identi cal to the YZ's, wit h the exception of reshaped exha ust and trans fe r po rt s, a hea vie r flywheel, a wide-ratio tr ansmission and the addition of a lighting coil. Additionally, the carbu retor is VM-t yp e Mikuni, while the YZ uses a TM type. Like the ' 93 WR, this year's crosscountry/hare scrambles offering from Yamaha featu res a 3.4-gall on tank (1.4 gallons large r than the YZ's), but it is slimmer than last year's bu lky WR unit. Because of the large tank, the WR's sea t do esn't extend as fa r forward as th e YZ's, but the tank/ seat combination is interchangeable between the two bikes. Th e WR us es th e sa me airbox as the YZ, though it ha s no holes d rilled in it. Also, an IS-inch rear whee l rep laces the YZ' s 19-incher. Ad diti ona l fea t u res aimed at the off-road racer include different suspension valving, a swingarmmo un ted sid estand, a qui ck-cha nge rea r wheel with snail-type cam adjustors, an a -ring cha in and a fro nt d isc guard. Because of the a-ring chai n, a steel rear sprocket rep laces the YZ's al uminum unit . The price has been increased a whopping $600, to $4999! . Fo r ' 94, Yamaha has retaine d it s three primary sales incentive p rograms, though each has un dergone minor revisio ns. Cust omers who pu rchase a '94 YZ or WR from August 1 through December 31 will receive a free "works kit ," which consists of a piston kit, a Yamalube lubricant kit, a set of Dun lop tires, and aT-handle tool set. According to Yamaha, the kits have a suggested retail value of up to $515. The same customers are eligible to participate in Yamaha's Track Techniqu es Riding School, taught by multi-time National MX Champion Rick Johnson. The full-day schools will be held at 20 locations across the country, bu t reservations are limited and filled on a firstcome, first-se rved basis. Th is year, Yamaha has added a $25 ad mi ni strative fee, to ens ure that those wh o register for the scho ol actually attend. Fina ll y, Yama ha has in cre as ed its already-strong motocross and off-road contingenc y program to over $5 million for ' 94, making it the largest contingency prog ram thus far announ ced for nex t year. If it rem ains the largest, it will mark the thi rd straight year th at Yamaha has offered the most. Owners of 1993-or-newer YZ and WR motorcycles are eligible fo r the contingency aw ards, and the progr am covers more events than before, wi th a total of over 400 local series and events included .
