Huss sta rted o ff h is winn in g eve n in g by s tea ling th e hol eshot of the 6~Occ heat on hi s Kawa sak i. An other Kawa saki pilot, Tyl er Smulders, kept him hon est throu gh out the race but could not comp lete the pass and wa s forced to se ttle for second . Smulders was on fire in the fin al , as h e grabbed the most throttle a n d jumped to the early lead wit h Hu ss hot on his tail. They were follow ed by ju stin Voight. Hu ss hounded Smu lders fo r a co uple o f lap s befor e eventually sneaking und ern eath in tum thr ee for the lead a nd the win. Smu lders a nd Voight held on (or second and third, respectively. After a rest art in the BOcc Senior heat , Kevin Rohd e g ra bbe d th e early le a d a head of Eric Mi schl er an d joe W ipperfur th . Murre was the ea rly leader in the fina l ahead of Rick Bretl and Gia nca rlo Gia nn in i be for e he ca ught a ru t in tum fou r. After a brief intermission to mend the track, H unde rtmark foun d the restart to his liking, gunned it and cruise d to the win. Tucker topples 5tarwest 5X By David Procida MORENO VALLEY, CA,jULY 3 Micha el Tuck er came awa y with the ove rall win in the 250cc Beginner class after du eling for the lead in moto one and riding intelligently in the second moto. In mot o on e, Hond a-moun ted Steve Skube bumped his way through the first tum an d ed ged Tucker out for the holesh ot, Adam Pierce gated third but quickly doubled his way past Tucker for second. Denni s Hyde also d osed on Tucker. Up front, Skube had ope ned up a little bit of a lead, but Pierce wa s do sing qu ickl y. Th e Suz uki rider dove to the insid e of the comer pre-ced ing the King Kong launch er jump and lost the fron t end, resulting in an embarrass ing so il sa mp le. Th is gave Skube a co m ma ndi ng lead as Tucker ass umed the number two spot. Behind hi m, H yd e took himself out of the runnin g by coming up way sho rt on the do uble ju mp an d retiring from the race. Dea n Dirks assumed the num ber four spot with Thomas Elder ro un ding out the top five. La te in th e ra ce, th e st and ings su d d e n ly cha nged as Skube we nt do wn in the Snake Pit. Tucker ass umed the lead at this point in the race with Ryan Beverage taking over the nu mbe r two spot. As he beg an to close in on Tu cker , th e leader picked up the pace. Hoping to ope n a bit of a lead , Tucker doubled the Tw in Pea ks ju mp only to have Beverage follow sui t an d con tinu e his charge. Skube wa s back underway, and ran in third ahead of Dirks and Elder. Tucke r ba rely held on to the lead a nd took the checke red to bring the first moto to a close with Beverage, Skube, Dirks, and Elder rou nd ing out the top five. Mot o two saw Adam Pier ce holeshot w ith Beverage a nd Tucker close behind. The three riders ope ned up a short lead on Dirks, who was runnin g in fourt h ahead of Joe Lour enco. As the rid ers reach ed the Twin Pea ks jump, Beverag e made his bid for the lead by attempting to double the Twi n Peaks jumps. As Pierce a nd Tucker sing led their way in the jumps Beverage came up wa y sho rt on the second jum p and execu ted a pe rfect Flying W. Beverage took himself ou t of con tent ion for the lead and the rema ind er of the moto. Back up a t the front Pier'ce had now opened up a few bi ke len gths on Tucker who now had come un der p ressu re from Dirks. The battle for fou rth was eve ry bit as intense as the battle for the lead as Mike Flow ers was bu sy fend ing off the charges of Lou renco. The two riders were dici ng as if it were for the lead, giving no qua rter to the othe r. At the halfway po int, Lou renco execu ted a pe rfect stuff on Flow ers to ta ke ove r fourth . At this poi nt, Dirks d ropped h is Yamaha in the kicke r a fte r th e la un ch e r jump bu t w as qu ick ly up a nd und erwa y befor e losing an y positions. Also on th e cha rge aft er a p oor s ta rt was Elder w ho had now bro ken in to th e top five af ter d rop pin g Skube back to sixth . Flowe rs, tryin g to mak e up for a poor first moto showing. pu t an in sid e line bloc k p ass o n Di r ks a nd moved into the number thr ee position. With the white nag waving. Pierce bega n his last lap aro und the track and went unchallen ged to the finish. Tucker finished a dis tant seco nd . Winner Pat Behrle (SF) led Ben Bostrom (6Y)at the Lawrenceburg Short Track. . When the results were posted, it was Tucker with the win over Pierce. Dirk's pa ir of fourthplace finishes earned him third overall in front of Skube and Elde r. In the 125cc Beginner ranks, Lloyd Lester p ull ed off the overall win with a three-two s ho w ing after fir st mota runner-up Eddie N ichols deve loped engine problems at the beginning of mo to two . Lester finished third in mo to o ne behind Ephraim Benjamin and Nich o!s. Neil Alonzo and john Aragon rounded ou t the top five. Mota two was a Aragon ru naway until late in the moto when the leader tangled with a lapper and co uld not get his Kawasaki restarted. Th is left th e ga te open for Ernie Sanchez who had DNF 'd the first moto, Sanchez held on to the lead for the remainder o f the moto with Les ter fini shing in the runner up slo t. Steve Dech en ey was running in the number three positio n with Benjamin and Alonzo rounding ou t the top five. Eickel sta rted off with a heart-stopping 125cc qualifier agai nst Downers Gr ove Yama ha pil ot Jeff Demen t. The two Nationa l calibe r compe titors b u mp ed an d ban ged a ll ove r th e cou rse, wh et ting the appeti te of all in a ttenda nce for the final. The fina l looked as thou gh it would be an ticlimactic. Eickel gra bbed the holeshot and it wa s Bret Pedo ne, Tim Damron , Jack Lee and Jeremy Baritoner who wer e giv ing cha se ea rly . As Eickel slowly moved out to a to -second lea d ove r Ja ck Lee a n d th e res I of the p ack, Dem ent beg an his move through the crowd, The ann ouncer picked him up when he was running 10th and then followed him as he picked off riders one and two at a time until he moved by Lee in to second with less tha n Iwo laps le ft. jim Randa seemed to be tied to Dement with a rope as they made th eir way to the front. Randa's effort fell one wheel short as he and Lee flew over the final tabletop. Eickel had a tougher time getling away in the 250cc A final. Although Eickel was quickest out of the gate in the qualifier and the final , he never could get away ' from Eric Weidemayer. Weidemayer kepI on the heat in both ra ces while figh ting off Rusty OU, jeff Stimac and Brandon jeffery. The 12Sec B division took two qualifiers and an LCQ to sort out the list for the final . When the checkers flew it wa s Mike Olsen takin g wins in his heat and in the final. He was chased hom e in the main b y Ma rk N owak, Da n Mo daff, Courtney Mack and Chad McDonald. . The 250cc B class w as also a full hous e. Qualifier winners Bill Tilford and Chad Stanko looked to be the ch oice for top honors in th e main, but as the laps wore down it was Dan Modaff who put togeth er th e best ride and took the win over Tilford, joe Carlino, Chu ck Lotigh and Chad Stanko.
