The (OII lill fOODI- CALIFORNIA SUPERBIIE CHAllENGE PRESENTED BY KAWASAKI Smith smokes to Bounty Hunter Motocross victory By Tom Prichard LOS BANOS,CA, JUNE 26 Bu tch Smit h made a triu mph an t ret urn to the Los Banos Fa irg rou nds by tak ing h is sixt h Bounty H u n ter Se ries ma in eve nt win o u t of seven appearances.Wit h hundreds of doll ars up for grabs. the field of 10 Pros who qualified were all tryi ng to stop Smith and pu t another name in the winner's circle. But in the three-week break between the first half of the series and the start of the second, Smith appeared to have gotten even stronger and was agai n in first place when the checke red flag came out. The Bounty Hu nter race takes the top quali fying Pros in all classes and li nes them up in a single- file start fo r a 16· lap ra ce. The fastest q ualify ing moto winne r is put in the back and th e rest of the riders are lined up according to h o w th ey finis hed overa ll in t heir classes. Passi ng m one y is pa id to a dd ince nti ve. A unique feature is tha t the prom oter a uctions the riders off to the crowd before the race a nd the pot is split between the winner and the spectator who boug ht him, add ing even more m oney to the purse. As the riders flew off for the start of the main event, it was obvio us that Smith was re a d y , moving from an eight h-place sta rt to fifth before the first lap was comple ted. Pat Bennett, who qualified ninth, had pa rked on Smith's rear fender a nd appeared ready to make a mo ve . Then, on lap two, going into a fast right-hand sweeper, Bennell slid out and dropped all the way back to last. Nathan Woods was in the lead and pulling away for the first three laps before bei ng overta ke n by a cha rg ing Jon N ico la us. Nicolaus enjoyed the lead for less than two laps befo re Smit h moved in a nd took it a way. Smith had been stead ily picki ng off r iders for the first six laps and look the lead by taking aw ay the line of Nicolaus going in to the underpass. Once into the lead Smith immed iately started to pull away, leaving Nico laus to battle wi th Pestana, who had also been cutting through the pack and movin g up quickly. Pestana wasted less than a lap before he managed to get around Nico laus and sta rt closin g on Smith. Sm ith had buil t up a nin e-second lea d a nd Pesta na was closi ng at a ra te of over a seco nd a lap . For th ree laps Pest'll'a closed, th en, only four seconds behind the leader, he slid out. In the tu m before the finish tabletop, Pestana had been going high . and using the berm to set him up for the finish line. This ti me he went low with a little too much speed and lost traction, winding up on the ground. Before he could remoun t, both Rusty Holla nd and Bennett were able to get by. When the wh ite nag came out, Holland and Bennett turned it up a notch and began to catch t he leader. In the mid section of the t rack, Bennett cut un der Holland and took over second . With less than half a lap to go, Bennett pou red it o n a nd closed to within five bike lengths of Smith at the checkered nag. Results 0 / A: 1. Bulch Smith (Hon); 2. rat Benn«."tt (Suz) ; 3.
