All righls ...erved, Many thanks for letting yo ur readership know abo ut the BLM's decision to again tempo rarily close Barstow-to-Ve ga s routes this Thanksgiving. For th ose in te rested in r iding in protest of the governmen t's ongoing mistreatment of di rt bikers, plea se feel free to p ublish my name and number. Having had some experience wit h the BlM on th is issu e, I will gl adly in form those int~~~ in the proper method for legally ndmg in protest by obtainin g a written exemption from the closure at no charge. For those who don't call, please publish the balance of this letter. Those seeking the BLM's permission mu st s t.a te in their let~er requesting ex emption that they WIsh to exercise their First Amendment Rights to Free Speech .and Fre~d?m of Assembly by conducting a trail nde on the Powerline Road along the Boulder Corridor beginning in the Alvord Road area on Saturday, November 27, the traditional anniversary of the B-to-V event. The letter should express the rider's discontent with the BLM's and government's policies regarding land closures and desert use and that an exemption is needed to legally ride in protest of these unfa ir and unwarranted policies. Failure to invoke the First Amendment may result in the denial of your request, so be sure to state this clearly. This yea r each request for exemp tion must be individually sen t. BlM sources ind ica te tha t a refundable $50 p erformance bo nd will be requ ir ed o f each rider who receives an exe mption, an d that the Boul der Corrid or is th e on ly protest rou te through the closure a rea which will be authorized for protest use. Please act immedi ately by send ing your letter requesting exemption . It must be postmarked by July 23 to be considered . I encourage all riders and friends of the desert to exercise their Constitutional Rights and to legally fight to make their voices heard. Again, call me with any questions. Alan M. Ghaleb Woodland Hills, CA 8181703-8645 Get to the wicket I reme mber about a yea r ago every one was moaning and eying about the (road race) Grand Prix not com ing to the Ll.S, Everyo ne seemed to have the ir own reasons w hy the GP would not be here. Blame Kenny Roberts, Bernie Ecclestone, the b ike manufacturers, Laguna Seca , and about anyone else you could poss ibly p ut the blame on . Well, the Grand Prix is back in the U.s., and if it fails to return, the only ones to blame will be ourselves. The way we can make sure the Gra nd Pri x returns is to ensure they m,,:kea profit, and our purchasin g a ticket IS the way to accomplis h this. I have already purchased my ticket, a three-day p~ss for $65, and I hope everyone else WIll do the sa me. I d on't feel this is too much to spend to see the bes t riders in the world on the best mach in es in the wo rld . Don't let Schwantz, Rainey, Chandler, Kocinski and all the other Amer icansthat have raced through the years down. Don Platek Westerville,OH In defense of... I jus t finis hed reading the Voices section in the June 30 issue and being a longtime dirt track fan was moved to reply. The letters attacking various aspects of the AMA's management highlight their authors' short-sighted views and lack of understanding abo ut the AMA's efforts to tum dirt track racin g around. Dirt track need s to attract sponsorship and to do tha t it needs to attract fans. Look at the bikes fans ride to the races. Lots of Harley riders out there can readily id en tify with 883 production-based race bikes. I ha ve tremendous respect for Ron Wood and his bikes are still plentiful in the Pro-Am and 600 Expert classes, but they have limited specta tor appeal. Don't believe it, ask a p romoter. And as far as Ricky Graham's Honda being kept out of the :,mitty Challenge at the Parkersburg National, the exh ibition race was sponsored by a Harley dealer for the benefit of Harley-mounted racers and fans . I doubt that even Ricky Graham would argue against tha t. . It's not a question of the AMA supporting Harley, but of the AMA, Harley and their riders supporting dirt track and looking for a way to draw in new fans and sponsors. I think the 883s are good for dirt track and I'd be first in line welcoming similar efforts from other manufacturers. No, they aren't the feature race, nor are they a match for the 600s, but that's not the issue, is it? Finally, if you have a better idea, why don't you suggest it to the AMA or manufacturers or race promoters? But until you have a little more to add than bluster or sarcasm, please don't criticize those who are trying to make a difference. Roger Falasco Bedford,OH p.s. I'm an AMA member and don't ride a Harley. The need for speed I completed my firs t road racing weekend thr ee days ago and am still coming d own from th e adrena line ru sh. After eight years of dreaming and two years of planning, sche ming, scri mp ing and savmg, I have done so me thin g that very few people seem to accom plish; I ha ve realized the dream of my lifetime. I would like to thank those people who helped all of this come true: Roger lyle and th e sa fe ty workers from the Mid-Atlantic Road Racing Oub; the fine people from the AGV Sports Group who put me on their road racer support program to get me s tarted with high quality safety equipment; the crew at Valley Cycles in Winch ester, Virginia; the staff from the MA RRC road ra cing school; and last, but not leas t, my wife Nancy, who even thou gh she is five and a half months pregnant, suppo rted me in my quest to fulfill my need for speed. Ross Kemmerly Stephens City, VA Credit where credit is due We truly enjoyed the Peoria 600 Na tional report by Dave Hoenig, however there are two deserving individuals who need to be recogniz ed . "The sc r a m b le to ch ange th e motor" was led by Bobby Deiss wh o was assisted by Mark Norell. Monty Heath was not present that day. We hope to finish as well or better (in the Peoria Grand National Championship TT) on August 8.
