PRIX Kazuto Sakata (8) leads the 125cc pack, including eventual winner Dirk Raudies(S). , (Barros) and Cri ville pa ss ed me about half a lap after that." In the end, it was Criville by .304-0f-asecond over Chandler, with Rainey a little more than four seconds back in fifth. Itoh finished sixth after making a mistake on the brakes and losing touch wi th the leaders, thou gh he was safely in front of the Cadalora/Macken zie spat. The p air too k tu rns lea d in g each ot her, Cadalora using the superior power of the factory Yamaha to take over for good on the last lap after havin g had front brake problems throughout the race. 250ccGP Speeding a way from the pole position, Loris Capirossi established himself early on as the man to beat and several riders beat themselves up trying. Rothmans Kanemoto Honda's Max Biaggi was right behind Cap irossi on the first lap when he was hit from behind by Romboni, crimping his left side exhaust pipe. Biaggi pitted to have it repaired, rejoined the race, but was out soon after. Romboni's 'd a y also e nd ed when he crashed while in second place in a ninety-degree right-hander on the second lap . All of this commotion allowed Capirossi to st re a k away, the It alia n holding better than a three- second lead on the th ird lap as Ruggia and Bradl began their pursu it. Bradl w o uld be dropped back to fourth as Harada moved up to third, then second on the sixth lap, he and Ruggia swapping positions constantly, neither holding a significant edge. Gradually, Bradl lost tou ch and had no answer when Kocinski, after a horrendous start that put him in 12th at the end of the first lap, came by on the 14th lap. It was then that the race for second began in earnes t and the crowd was clearly behind Kocinski, though their countryman, Wile o Z eelenb erg, was invo lved in a spat for seventh slightly farther back. By now Capirossi had vanished, his lead sweIling to nearly seven seconds before his pit crew implored him to back off, something 'he wasn't in the mood to do. "My mechanics said to slow down at the end of the race, but I was afraid to d o that because I could run at that pace with no problem:' Capirossi said. Kocinski ca ught, and p as sed both Harada and Ruggia on the 15th lap, the Frenchman beginning to have problems with the Aprilia . First he admitted having chosen the wrong tires, causing him to slide around too much at the end, then added that he was ha ving ignition problems and the motor was cutting out w ith about five laps to go. The race for second would be between Harada and Kocinski. Kocinsk i seemed to ha ve the ed ge with a few laps to go, then he ran wide in de Strubben, a horseshoe heading onto the back strai gh t. The problem, he said, was with the gearbox. " I w as ha ving trouble goi ng fro m fourth to third, and that caused me nearly to run off the track at one point. That's wh y the other two were able to catch me back up again: ' he said . Harada made his run on the backstraight of the last lap, Kocinski taking him with :'an insan e move" in the next right. Harada d idn't give up and took him again in a fast right bend near the end of the lap . The television came ras showed Kocinski seemed to be surprised, sitting up in the saddle as .Harada took a daring inside line, but Kocinski thou ght it was clean. "I might have stayed ahead, but aga in I had trouble shifting and he just outaccelerated me on the next straight section. He rode fair, it was not a bad move on his part:' Kocinski said after crossing the line .763-of-a-seco nd behind the championship leader. Ruggia was about a second back in fourth and not unhappy with the resul t, th e same sentiment Helmut Bradl expressed after finishing fifth. "After all the problems during practice we took the risk to change the gearbox completely again and we were lucky with it," Ruggia said. " O n ly when Kocinski swept past, there was nothing I could do, and after a small slide I lost the contact to the leaders a bit." . Loris Reggiani finished sixth on the Aprilia, the Italian using his spare bike to get the better of Zeelenberg and TelkorYamaha Valesi's Pier-Francesco Chili. The Exac t SoftwareDC Sports-backed Zeelenberg took over sixth with four laps to go, only to see Reggiani come back on the final lap, Zeelenberg ended up sevIJ' enth, and Chili eighth.
