Roeder bags Buckeye HM win

Canada conver ged on Buckeye Speedway for
the 11th An nual Freed om Ha rley-David so nsponsored East ern Regiona l Ha lf Mile, a nd it
was Oh ian Geo rge Roeder II who came away
the evening's top racer. An esti ma ted crowd o(
1500 watched as Roeder pil ot ed h is Mik e's
Harley-Da vid son /Ro eder
H-D /Sartin
Trucking/Bell /Frie-n-Frac Trucking /KK-sponsored Harley-Davidson XR750 to the 750cc class
win.
Defending race champion Will Davis put his
Honda out front at the s ta rt o( the final, but
Mike Varnes passed him on the first lap . Roeder
also passed Davis on the first lap, and m ad e
quick wo rk of Varnes a lap aft er that.
By th e ha lfway point, Roeder had est ab lished a comfo rtable lead over a th ree-way ba ttle
for se co n d b etween Va rnes, Da vis a n d Ste ve
Morehead . With two laps to go, More head took
control of that ba ttle and held a firm grip on second , but time ran out for the Findlay Flier before
he could reel in Roeder.
Roede r nabbed the win with a Io-bike length
lead over More head, Davi s and Varnes. Roeder
was p resented with a $500 bonus from the race
sponsor, Freedom Harley-Davidson.
In the 600cc final. Kevin Varnes led the first
seven laps aboard his Rotax , but slipped a bit on
the eighth lap and allowed Doug O 'Boyle to
sneak past. James Hart also took advantage of
Varn es ' mistake and motored into second. The
order remained th e sa m e to the fin ish with
O'Boyle tak ing the win ahead of Hart and
Varnes.
The Pro-Am final saw Ken Coolbeth Jr. lead
from s tart to finish, as he was never tes ted
throughout the entire race. Chris Hart nipped
Dan Brown at the finish line for second.

Rock Dam Trial

90s at the Little Rock OHV area in the Angel es
Nati onal Forest, Markham advanced on a steady
riding Zinsmann after spotting him a fou r-poi nt
lead on the first loop.
Zinsmann gave up half his lead on the second lap wh en Mar kham, on a Rota x-p ow ered
April ia, underscored him 14-16. Both Zins man n
and Markham saved their bes t for last. Markham
erased the rest of Zins ma nn 's lead wi th a nin epo int final loop , tying the two riders at 42.

clea n ride rs to break the dea d lock. Zins mann 's
co nsis ten t 4-4-4 clea n tota ls be at out th e 1-5-5
totals turned in by Ma rkha m by a single perfect
ride.
The sectio ns a t the ev en t, the sixth round of
the Ameri can Trials Associ a tion Champ ionshi p
Series, were a throwbac k to the twi n-shock days
0 1 tria ls. With no la rge roc ks to provid e challen ges to the 57 co mpe titors , th e sections co ncentra ted on technical turns thr ough th e bowling ball-sized rocks, sand and shallow water of
Little Rock Creek. Po int tota ls wer e relatively
high for winners a nd low lor also-rans. Cleans
we re at a premium for all classes in th e tricky
sections .

Pickett more than doubled h is score on the last
loop , but the Fantic rider still won by 10 over
desert-racer.tumed-trials-rider Casey Longman.
