Mark Moock pulled out from the pack after su fferi ng a m id pa ck start, but rod e hard and passed Sh u ll ju st before th e white flag . Moock won the qualifier with Shull fini s hing second . Stephenson took the holeshot in the second qualifier. That was the last the pack saw of him. The action too k p lace between Trent Hansen , Josh Wagner and Paul Hunter. Wagner a nd Hunter seem to be drawn together like a magnet. Wagner ate Hunter's dus t, but on the se ven th lap, he p ushed H unter aside on a curve and took the checkered flag to fmish second behind ' Stevenso n. Th e 125cc main was domi na ted by Stephenso n. He p ulled out ahead on the start and never stopped. The only th ing Wagner, the second-place finis her, saw o f Stephenson was his dust. Hansen an d Hu n ter put up a ba ttle for th ird place. H a n sen managed to ho ld third p lace, with H unter pushing him on every curve , When the checkered flag waved, though, it was Stephenson, Wagn er, Hansen, Hun ter and Bates. The 250cc qu alifie r found Ste phenson far ahead of the o ther rid e rs. He had the crowd shouting as he hi t the th rottle and jumped five whoops a t once. Non e of the other riders tried it. Stephenson came in first, followed by Wagner, Hunter an d Ha nsen. Hansen had maintai ned second place behind Stephenson until the sixth lap, whe n he came up short on a dou ble. Moock finished right behi nd Ha nsen to qualify for the main. In the 250cc main , Stephenson blasted out of the gate to stay far ahead o f the pack . Carlsbad Motocross win By Dave Burgess CARLSBAD, CA,JUNE 26 North County Yama ha's Donald Up ton recovered from a first-mo to error and reboun ded wi th a second-moto win to nab the overall wi n in the 250cc Pro cl ass at rou nd tw o o f the Racing Enterprises-promoted AXO Spo rt He lme t Series, held at Carlsba d Raceway . "From the way my day started, I didn't think I'd win,' said Up ton. Things got off to a rocky start for Upt on as he sta rted the first moto on th e wro ng gate. Upton began the race on the second row with the Intermediate class rid ers, whil e the Pro class riders were nea rly half a lap ah ead. Enzo Racing's Derek Natvig held contro l of the Pro race, with Jim Chamberlain and Bobby Hubba rd on his tail. Meanwhile, Up ton led the Intermediate class and began to reel in the pros. Hubba rd forced his way pa st Ch amberlain for second, while Up ton moved withi n striking distance. Upton' s charge wa s momenta rily slowed when he slid ou t at the bo ttom of the d ownhill, but he recove red quic kly a nd wa s soo n o n Chamberla in ' s rear wh eel. Upto n passed Chamberlain with ease and we nt on to nip Hubbard on the last lap. Once into second, Up ton looked to reel in Natvlg, but he was too far out of reac h. Na tvig nabbed the moto w in over Upton and Hubbard. Up ton made sure to start on the righ t gate in moto two and grabbed the holeshot ahe ad of Nat vig and Hubbard. Upton q uickly pulled away from Natvig and went on to an easy win, which also ne tted him the overall. Natvig he ld on to s econd, we ll ahea d of H u b b a rd a n d Chamberlain. Res u lts 80 BEG: 1. Hicks on track at Glen Helen Speedway By Elaine Jones SAN BERNARDINO, CA JUNE 23 , Gary Hicks had everything working Wednesday nigh t at Glen Helen Speedway and not even a power fail ure could deter him, as he recorded his second Handicap main in a row . The lights went out for about 15 minutes and the riders w ho had lined up for the Ha ndi cap semi we re to be sent back to the pits . The Glen Helen crew wen t to work and po wer was soo n restored and some great racing ensued . Hicks, on his Cohon & Hicks/Sisco Roofing /Cirello / STP-backed GM, came from the 50 ya rd line and ran down Mike Reed by the fourth lap to ta ke the lead. Mike Faria, also off the 50, had to work a little harde r, as Reed held him at bay unti l the last lap and the n Faria p ut the move on him and go t the pass and second place. The Scra tch main belonged to Sco tt Brant. He had the pole and a grea t gate and was to the first tum a lialf a bike length ah ead of Charlie Venegas, w ho came off the seco nd slot. Brant, who likes to work the outside at Glen Helen, got out in the deep stuff and had some lift but still kep t th ings in' control and p icked up the win. Venegas came away wi th the pla ce and Faria was in the money agai n wit h th ird as he wa s able to hold off Hicks . In the Support main it was a blast form the past as Rick Farron came out of retirement and ran away with the class win. Ramsey rips Pro Sport MX By Barbara Will iams Photo by Loren Williams WYIllEVILLE, YA, JUNE20 Mar k IV-backed Nathan Ramsey scored his first win since advancing to the A class this season, pu tting together 2-1 finishes to take the 125ee A class vict ory and third overa ll in the 250cc A class on No Fear Day at Pro Sport MX. "I told m y dad I' d g iv e h im a win fo r Father 's Day: ' said Ramsey. Chad Lough owned th e first rnoto, leav ing the battles for the remainder of the top five spo ts to Bobby Stova ll, Ramsey , Billy Cox and Shane Templeton, w ith Shawn Prather in sixth. By the end o f lap two Ramsey ducked u nd erneath Stovall in a comer , claiming the runner-up spot for the rest of the seve n-lap contest. Stovall fended off Cox' insisten t challenges for third, while Templeton filled out the fifth position. Stovall outgunned the field for the secondmota early ad vantage, pressured by Ramsey, Lough, Cox and Templeton. Ramsey blasted into the lead early in the race and there he stayed, in spi te of numerous threa ts from Stovall and Cox. The batt le betw een the duo slowed them slightly, allow ing Ramsey to pu ll away, stayi ng out of reach even afte r Cox finally disposed of Stovall on the final lap . Loug h, us ua lly a po tent force, was hampered by motor troubles as he popped .an d crackled to fou rth: Templeton cru ised to fifth in his first rac e since breaking his collar bone . Cox and Lough traced mo to wins in the 250cc A class, but Cox earned the overall victory for two reasons: First, Cox was cooking on his Mar k IV-backed YZ, p ulling strong ho lesho ts in both motes . Second, Ramse y served as a buffer in the fi rst m ote , co mi n g between Cox and Lough for second place in the moto, Res ults 50: 1. Stacy Thom psen (yam); 2. lack Mut teT (Yam); 3.
