Fay edges Annen at Castle Rock IT By Derryl An de rso n 36 CA STLER OCK, WA,jUNE19 N ichols Supply /Paul Pei roli /Ma xima /Scott / Fardig Racing /Downtown H-D /Jim Roseth / Lester' s Ma chi n e /Tom Housema n-back ed Mickey Fay took ad vantage of a late-race singlefile restart to fly under jeff Annen and claim the Dea ler ' s Nite Pr o w in at the Castle Rock TI, where a beautiful night of racing was slowed by several crashes and too many restarts. In the flrst heat race Dan Stanley rode a perfe ct race to take the win over Fa y , Sh a ne Butchart, Ron Waters and Chris Fitzhugh. The first thr ee transferred to the ma in event w ith Don Wilson and jeff Hiatt, who fell in three, and the rest of the Pros going to a semi that wo uld also take three. Heat tw o took three resta rts to fina lly get under way. It was Boise's first-year Expert Scott McPherson getting the holeshot and ho lding off Del Schni tzer lap after lap . Behind the duo was Kirk Stro ng, Russ Yamamoto and the others. Hea t three took a resta rt before Annen took con trol and went the d istance ahead of Speedy Kelt Cha rlie Brown , joe Kopp and the others. Kell, Yama moto an d Gary Strode took the ma in event transfers out of the semi. In the main event Annen got the scratch over Fay. Strong, Stan ley, Butcha rt, McPherso n an d the ot he r hard cha rg ing Pros. After two lap s aro und the track a nd over the jump, the field sprea d ou t excep t for the front-running fourso me tha t co ntinually ran with a bike length or less sepa ra ting each other. On lap 10 Yamamoto slid out comin g at the jump and Charlie Brown had nowhere to go excep t down. just as this unfolded McPherson ca me over the jump sideways and landed that way, send ing h im high ove r the bars. The ,,-'C! flags flew as three riders were down. On the sing le-file restart, Fay hooked up and flew under Annen goin g throu gh turns one and two. Just like in last year's National, Fay was no t to be caught. The battl e now un fold ed aro und An ne n and Stanl ey , who swa pped posi tio ns back and forth, virtually running side by side for alm ost two laps before Annen pulled ahe ad coming into tum three, while Stanley slipped off the edge sligh tly. Procida MORENO VALLEY, CA JUNE 26 , Dean Van Riper p roved that his ridi ng ability isn't limited to 125s by taking all four 250cc Novice cla ss wins in the fina l ro und of th e Starw est Trophy Series. When the gate fell to start off moto one, Van Riper set the front end down in time to grab the holeshot. Douglas Cave (311) and Mark Duval (320) battled at the Glen Helen Raceway. jon Levey hounded Va n Riper th rou gh the first few tums befo re dump ing his Yamaha in the rockers. Christop he r Nelson took over the number-two spot, wi th David McCown running in third. McCown closed the ga p on Nelson and made his pass after the King Kong ju mp in the back section fo r second place. Anoth er rid er moving up after a p oor s tart wa s Mike Blair, who came from almost d ead last to work his way up into fourth by the second lap. Up at the front, Van Riper was now feeling the heat from series point lead er McCown, who was looking for a way around the inexperi enced 250cc rider. McC own actua lly went past Van . Riper using a far outsi de lin e, but Van Rip er beat him to the ap ex o f the turn and held the lead . As the moto came to a close Van Riper had opened up a co mfo rtable lead , with McCown falling on the last lap to finis h seven th. Nelson rode alone in second, with the battle being for the thi rd position as Scott Miller moved up to challenge Blair. This pair wo uld go back and forth the en tire last lap, with neither rider givin g an inch. Even as they flew past the finish line checkered flag, the two were alm ost side by side, w ith Blair barely holdin g on to th ird . Rounding ou t the top five at the end of the mo to were Miller and Jimmie Deever. Moto two saw Nelson grab the holeshot with Van Riper at the rear of the pack . McCown again ga ted seco nd wit h Levey, Blair, and Miller in tow. Van Riper, making up for a poor start, had already passed three riders a nd was now knocking on Miller 's rear fend er. Blair p icked off Levey on the opening lap in the back sectio n befo re Van Riper had a chance to pass him. Going to the ins ide line, Van Riper shot by Levey and then proceeded to pick Blair off in the following comer. Up at the fron t Nelson had his hands full with McCown, but th e battle for th ird wa s rap idly closing on the leade rs. Van Riper made a bold move on Miller, soa ring over the Kawa saki ride r as the two cleared the fmish- line tabletop to take over third . McCown fell victim to Van Riper in the esses, w h ich o n ly lef t N el son between Van Riper and the checkered. With the white flag ou t for Nelson, Van Riper surp rised him by diving to the inside of a turn a nd taking over the lead . Onc e in the lead Van Riper was gone wi th the wind . Nelson held off the charges of McCown, finis hing in the number~two spo t once again.Van Riper earned the overall ahead of Nelso,,Resu lts 50 MOD O rEN: 1. Caton 8eaYft'S (yam); 2.
